Looking to buy one of these: Sony RDRGX315, Panasonic DMRES15 or DMRES20.
I record a lot of movies (Sony doesn't let recordings of HBO), so that's one strike for that model. I record in +RW and I hear different views whether these Pan models will record in +RW. Panasonic rep on phone says they both do; user via internet says ES15 does not. Anxious to get rid of my Magnavox. Suggestions please.![]()

none of the above.
I own a Panasonic ES10, JVC DR-MH30, Pioneer 520, Toshiba XS-52 and Sony RDR-HX715.
The best are:
1) Pioneer
2) JVC (with a color corrector and proc amp is my favorite)
3) Toshiba
Sony is good, but for what they do, they are way over-priced IMHO and not better recorder than above list. Panasonic is nothing more than a door stop. I do use it from time to time for problematic VHS tapes with vertical jumps. -
I have tested the Sony GX315. They are available at a few stores with $50 rebate so they can be had for $120-$170. What is unusual about the 315 is that it appears to be an IRE = 0 machine. All my recordings were light with IRE = 7.5. When the source IRE was changed to 0, it was good.
The ES15 will record to dvd+rw but that does not mean every brand.
You seem to have had more than your share of problem recorders. It might be worth examining if there are environmental factors affecting these products before getting another.
