I've had my Samsung DVD recorder a week and already I can't stand the remote. I'm used to my JVC DVD player's remote that fits my hand perfectly and can also control my JVC TV's volume, turn from TV to Video, and even turn it off. The Samsung's remote is large, seems to have all the buttons in the wrong place, and I can't even control my TV with it, so I'm having to do a kind of two-remote two step that is driving me crazy!

I'm keeping my JVC DVD player, for sure, it's been trouble-free for going on four years now, and I wish I could have kept it connected to my TV, but for some reason I don't understand, the antenna hookup won't output sound to the television like it did when my VCR was hooked up the exact same way! But anyway, can anyone tell me if there is another remote I can get that can control the DVD recorder and the TV at the same time?

I appreciate any helpful thoughts on the matter.

There are plenty of programmable remotes. There are ones that can connect to the internet to download the program codes. Though those cost over $100. Just go to a bestbuy or a circuit city and check out the tv section. They'll have the fancy universal remote controls. The ones with the touch screens will cost more but those can do just about anything. Or you could get a cheaper no frills model and check the button layout to make sure its what you want.

EDIT - here are two from a search at cnet.com - they both go for around a $100 for a full featured fully programable remote:

The good: Better shape than previous Harmony remotes; strong backlight; choice between device or activity usage; intuitive, Web-based programming.

The bad: No rechargeable battery option; numeric keypad buttons are too small and grouped too closely together; Web interface might intimidate nontechie users.

The bottom line: A sleek design, an impressive feature set, and a manageable price tag make the Logitech Harmony Advanced Universal Remote an excellent choice for Xbox 360 owners.

Some people may consider paying $100 for a remote normal, but I don't! However I did find a unit that did work for me for less than $10, even though I still have to go to the machine to eject. I'm in the process of trying to find one for considerably less than $100, thanks, that will have the open/close button. However, thanks to all for suggesting the universal remote in the first place. That had never occurred to me!

Get a learning remote. Then you can program the buttons to perform whatever funtions you want.
