How does one set/change the recording quality on a Toshiba RD-XS34? What are the corresponding bit rates and resolution?

All that is in the manual. Page 161 has the instructions for custom bitrate and audio encoding settinsg, page 172 has a chart that shows all the possible combinations of bitrate setting and audio encoding, with their respective max recording times to the HDD.

You can download a PDF file of the owner's manual and read it with the free Adobe Reader software.
Here is the link ---> CLICK HERE
Looks like the info you want is on page 49 of the manual. At least those are the "pre-selectable" recording modes. If you go to page 161 of the manual there you will find how to select the recording level you want including how to enter any of the "manual" recording modes. The list of manual recording modes (and corresponding recording times) can be found on page 172 of the onwer's manual.

*** EDIT ***
Oh well I was beat by gshelley61 but in my defense I had to download the manual and look myself as I don't actually own this DVD recorder ... whereas gshelley61 does own one."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

BTW, I just got another firmware update disc from Toshiba... my TVGOS works now. It never would load any data or program listings all this time, even though other TVGOS equipped models I own had no problem. This latest firmware CD is part # RDXS34V1-2 and is free from Toshiba.

I remember in the early days of DVD that someone I knew had a Toshiba model (I forget now what model but I think it was a 2nd generation machine) that needed a firmware upgrade and he had to mail it to Toshiba (and pay for the mailing) for them to update it.
I think they paid to mail it back but he had to pay it mail it to Toshiba.

Thank you. I set what I wanted, but how do I get the recorder to choose this for my external input source when recording (it seems to stay with the default)? Is there a setting on this machine that is comparible to JVC's 3 hour, half-D1, which is a good compromise between quality and recorsing time?

It seems I need to use enhanced for black-level for recording VHS, correct (the other choice is too dark)? What other settings do you recomment for recording VHS (noise filtering?)? I am using a JVC S9911U for playback (please adivse to the settings on this as well). Thanks.
