  1. I've got film-based material encoded at NTSC 29.97fps and I need to get it back to 23.98. I'm trying it on JES Deinterlacer but when it doesn't quit on me, it gets fairly persistent frame drops. What I do is:

    —rip it from the DVD
—convert the .m2v to .mov using DiVa
    —convert the ac3 to .aiff
—recombine picture and sound in FCP
    —use ITVC in JES Deinterlacer

    Am I doing something wrong?

just curious ... are you sure your material is encoded at 29.97, and not 23.98 with 3:2 pulldown? Many programs will display the wrong info.

  3. You can use Cinematize to accomplish this whole thing in a single step. Cinematize will do the inverse Telecine and de-interlacing if necessary. Note that if the material is stored as true film progressive frames, no de-interlacing is necessary.

The problem I have had with DiVA is that it creates QuickTime movies with non-constant frame rates. I think a lot of tools cannot handle this type of movie.

  4. It is encoded at 29.97.

One problem is that this is an early 1990s TV series shot on film but apparently edited on tape, and posted on tape as well. The 3:2 pulldown algorhythm is not constant throughout.
