I've got film-based material encoded at NTSC 29.97fps and I need to get it back to 23.98. I'm trying it on JES Deinterlacer but when it doesn't quit on me, it gets fairly persistent frame drops. What I do is:
—rip it from the DVD
—convert the .m2v to .mov using DiVa
—convert the ac3 to .aiff
—recombine picture and sound in FCP
—use ITVC in JES Deinterlacer
Am I doing something wrong?

just curious ... are you sure your material is encoded at 29.97, and not 23.98 with 3:2 pulldown? Many programs will display the wrong info.

You can use Cinematize to accomplish this whole thing in a single step. Cinematize will do the inverse Telecine and de-interlacing if necessary. Note that if the material is stored as true film progressive frames, no de-interlacing is necessary.
The problem I have had with DiVA is that it creates QuickTime movies with non-constant frame rates. I think a lot of tools cannot handle this type of movie. -
It is encoded at 29.97.
One problem is that this is an early 1990s TV series shot on film but apparently edited on tape, and posted on tape as well. The 3:2 pulldown algorhythm is not constant throughout.
