for me to fill 3 quarters of a sheet of paper, what dimensions should the image have. In fact, what program editor out there displays a page preview. I know there's Microsoft Word but are they any applications like macromedia or adobe that can do the same thing?

Actually there a ton of graphic programs that can do those things... Now I have feeling you want to do more than than just add picture.... if that was the case you could evenuse M$ paint to that... If there other things you want it to do.... should add that... in order to get the best replies....

Now there are programs that will make greeting cards, signs, broshures, etc etc etc......

2 of my favorites are printshop and printmaster. (broaderbund.com... in your case, it would show the page layout and allow you to place your picture any where and size the picture the way you want to fit the page.. very simple.... plus you can do some basic editing of the picutre and background, then you can add text and other graphics or what ever!! in fact.... when your looking a foldable brochure..... it will lay out gridlines to where you place things and later to be able to fold after printing...

now if on a tight budget... yo don't have to get the latest and greatest but get something one or 2 version older... they'll work well and lot cheaper....

For layout of a flyer or brochure you'll probably want to be using Microsoft Publisher or Adobe InDesign. I prefer the Adobe products myself since I use the entire suite whenever I can. InDesign is also easier to use, or at least for me.
