Go for a later Pioneer then. They are up to the 111 series now. Not a lot has changed, they've just got faster and can now do dual layer discs. They are also ridiculously cheap! I paid over £200 for my original 104 and £30 from www.svp.co.uk for my current 109. Changing will be a straightfoward swap, nothing will appear any different until you come to burn a disc and it will do it in a lot less time.

I just replaced my dead Pioneer 106D with this Samsung burner that has been great so far:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827151118

It does have added features like writing to RAM discs and Lightscribe, but you don't need to use them. The drive is a bit slower than most at loading/mounting discs, but otherwise excellent. I've used it to write DVD+RW and CD-RW and it writes very reliably so far. It's also an inch shorter depth-wise than the Pioneer, so that should give your computer case more breathing room.

    Hey!
I also updated my dvd writer with Pioneer DVR-111D last month. It performs well until now.

    For your reference.
