How can I identify the format of a DVD?

I purchased a DVD from a UK seller. I really wanted the title, and couldn’t find it in NTSC. I’d never tried anything like a PAL conversion, but wanted to give it a try.

“Fred Dibnah’s Industrial Age” arrived, and to my surprise worked in my DVD player (an economy brand) and the TV (Walmart special) didn’t complain either. My clone computer just treats it as a run-of-the-mill DVD.

The box/case has no clues as to the format, and the DVD silkscreen is generic, etc.

I'd like to identify the format of this DVD. I'd like to by others, but want to be sure I know what I'm doing.

    Thanks

If you just want to know if it is PAL, you can check the framerate with several tools like Gspot, or most software players like Power DVD. PAL is 25 frames per second (fps) NTSC is 29.97 or 23.976. The frame sizes are different also. See 'What is' DVD to the upper left for DVD info. <<<<<<r

  4. Welcome to the digital age, the DVD you have is most likely in PAL, but a lot of NTSC DVD players can play NTSC/PAL/VCD/SVCD/DVD. Because the DVD just has a bunch of zero and one, it is up to the decorder to format any of these to fit your NTSC TV screen. One of the visitors always post a note like "There are no PAL or NTSC. There is only YUV."

Note : VCRs actually record NTSC or PAL signal on the tape, and thus they need to convert the signal to plays on non-native VCR/TV system.

Well I would suggest getting a copy of avi.codec, which is freeware available on this site, then insert the DVD into your computers DVD drive right click on it and select explore with avicodec.

Once in the avicodec menu you should get a list of video files, from here select options and set avicodec to display the framerate (frames per second) of the DVD. if the results display 25 fps the DVD is PAL format, if it displays 23.976 fps the DVD is NTSC format.

Most computer players will tell you. Try Configuration-> Info, PAL 720 X 576, NTSC 720 X 480. PowerDVD will actually list it.
