Hey guys, Happy New Year. I "aquired" Windows Xp Home Edition Upgrade. According to the manual, there is an otion for an upgrade or a full install. My second hard drive (30 gig) I want to be dedicated. Is there any way I can do a new install just on the second hard drive? I also noticed that you can only choose a file system if you do a new install, which means everything gets erased. Am I onto something here? I was told It would only install on the main drive or boot drive, this true?

    Thanks....

    Apache

for around $20 you can get a drive switcher that is basically a key switch on the front of your puter that switches your boot drive, it is a nice set-up in that you can basically have 2 computers, on for gaming, one for capture, one for you, one for the rest of the family...lol

if their both in ur machine, why not just install on the primary.

  4. Apachewraith, I installed Windows XP Pro on my second hard drive only (30Gb). It gives you the choice when you install it. It worked beautifully and I was able to convert to NTFS format w/o losing files and it gave me a boot option screen which automatically goes into XP unless you change it at start up. I have 98SE on the other hard drive. The only problem is that 98SE does not recognize the other drive because it doesn't see NTFS

Yeah I installed it on the slave hard drive, and I get that same option. So far everything is working good, except I can't change my display resolution to 1024 X 768. Everytime I try it just puts my monitor in standby. I think it may be the drivers or something. So is that why I can see the primary drive on XP and I can't see XP's drive using 98? I was wondering that. Would it be a good idea to access the windows 98 drive while using XP or will that screw something up?

    Thanks again.......

You can see Win98 from XP as it can recognise the FAT f/s it uses - Win98 cant recognise the NTFS file system that XP uses though unless you use third party software. Yes, you can access your files on the Win98 partition from XP, but dont screw with system files unless you know what you are doing - You can still happily play with all of your own files though like your mp3s or whatever.

d4.... thanks..... I am not going to mess with the C: drive. In fact is there any way to hide or lock it so it cannot be accessed?

I dont have XP yet so I dont know the ins and outs of how to do it, I use Linux and 98SE. It can be done though, just get an XP user to tell you.

ApacheWraith, you may not want to go this route now because you've already done the install but you could have TWO C: drives, one with 98 and the other with XP both invisible from the other. That's how I have mine done. If you want to try it, repost and I'll provide the steps.
