  1. Just wondering what real interest there is out there for a new VH Video Competition? If you are interested, will you enter a film yourself? Would you like to enter a film, but something is stopping you? Any ideas about how to improve it? Or do you think it is a waste of time?

    Thanks.

I vote for the last option!!! (actually I can submit a 5 second lightsaber sequence I made of me but no sound - actually I think its only 2 seconds )
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

I would not be entering, but I think it is a good idea

I do not have anywhere near the artistic flair, the time nor the sources of material required to give a good account of my skills if last year's entries are taken as the datum. However I like the concept of the competition though, so long as people with 0 posts in the forums are not allowed to enter.
    If in doubt, Google it.

As much as I felt last year's winner was an outsider with some minor real-life experience, I really liked her work. So if a "post rule" is created, let it be done in a way that encourages people to join the site, rather than make them feel unwelcomed.

I'm in, again. I've already made all the suggestions I can think of.

I voted "Yes, I'd like to enter, but..."

My main barriers to entering last time were:

    1) Lack of imagination - that won't change, but last year's entries were an inspiration.

    2) Lack of time - my work schedule is still the same, but having (much) more than three months would definitely help.

    3) The subject ("Baldrick") - obviously, I could see how it was relevant to the site, but it didn't fire the imagination. However, seeing how last year's entries used "Baldrick" does help to clear this up and now sets a precedent.

Given more time - say at least 6 months - I reckon I could come up with an idea (grill imaginative friends) then shoot and edit something together.

In short, if you're gonna launch it do it soon and think about picking a subject that's less abstract.

Yes, yes, yes! Even if I don't think I'll ever enter myself, I really loved last comp, watching all entries. But who knows - as we've seen, all it takes is a $10 web cam and a good idea. It's the idea part that's bothering me...

I'm in! I couldn't last time but now I have a mini-dvd camcorder and I'm ready to participate!

Actually, there were a lot of complaints about how loosely the entrants treated the topic last time. The precedent set wasn't regarded well but I personally agree with YOU. I think they should pick a genre and tell everyone to go nuts! A specific topic is too limiting while telling everyone to do their best ACTION/DRAMA/SCI-FI/HORROR short and submit it would be much better. Broad topics are okay but I agree that "Baldrick" (with props to THE MAN) was too limiting.

    Either way, I'm in.

Now that I have more time to send on the site I would love to be more involved with the competition ths time. I really felt I missed out on a lot of fun last time.

I don't like the idea of a specific genre. Part of the challenge and fun was applying creative juices to the specific topic, but being able to select my own genre and style is what made it enjoyable. If I were told that I had to make a horror film, I probably wouldn't enter because I don't even like to watch horror films, much less make them. And even if I did, it wouldn't be my best work because my heart wouldn't be in it.

I like the topical idea over the genre idea. That way people can go in any direction they want with it.

Imagine how many different ways you could go with "Late for Work" or "About to go on a date, but shower just broke" or "tgpo is chasing me with a can of whipped cream and a lava lamp" There are just so many options.

I totally agree - topic over genre gives guidance, but doesn't restrict ideas. My only disappointment is that I would have liked you to be chasing me with a whip and cream, as you burnt me with the lava lamp last time... Maybe that's why you want to do it again...

  17. Keep on topic please.

    Excellent suggestions so far:

    * Submissions either must come from a contributing member or have a separate category for "outsiders"

    * More time set aside to enter submissions

    * Flexible topic covering all genres

How about technical awards??? Maybe something for best lowlight conditions? Or best editing? Or best compression? Something like that?

A good idea, but one I'd recommend for when the competition has had a few more successful runs. However - remember that "best" is subjective, and so could be difficult to judge fairly.

Get the competition established, refined and working well at a basic level and then start introducing change. Don't try to run before you (the competition) can walk - you'll just end up flat on your face.
