It's official, UMD is a bomb. Time to go the way of R2R, 8-Track, CED, Audio Cassette, Beta, Laserdisc, S-VHS, DAT, and the not too far off VHS.

    Sounds like Blu-Ray is too.
Said one high-ranking exec: "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb -- like Blu-ray."

Blu-Ray is still kinda new though. I mean the market hasn't really even started. It's like saying a concept car is a bomb. I bet those following the HD-DVD market are happy to see this report.

UMD discs out here were costing AUS$35 each for a movie like Spiderman, when the DVD version (2 discs) was in the bargin bin next to it for under AUS$15. And they wonder why no one wants to buy them . . . . . . .

To expand on Dr. Gee, it's more like (Circuit Vity) DivX. Most of those mentioned were the standard media at the time, not a novelty like UMD.

I really don't get the appeal of watching movies (or even playing games) on such a tiny screen (I'm talking to you too, iPod )

Portable mini TVs never really took off themselves either. The most popular one I've seen is the recent GameBoy SP TV adapter. THat's really starting to roll out there. Is Nintendo still making the SP? I will say it is a ton better than the DS as far as wanting to buy & play. I really have no other use than games for a DS so its not practical for me. I already have a Pocket PC and I don't want to get caught at work playing games on it.

    Crowded subway perhaps?
Crowded subways aren't the place to have out an audio cassette walkman, let alone a lap-top. People will steal your plastic jewelry.

Why would anyone want to watch any moving video on a screen smaller than a couple dozen inches let alone a 2 inch screen? Why would anyone want to pay more for less? I guess the fact that this bombed answers both those questions.

I still don't get it, I would prefer a paper or book. How many movies can you watch anyway? Do people need video so bad that they can't wait until they get home to watch on a regular screen TV? Even those ones for in the car I don't get. If your travelling with a bunch of kids on a long trip I can see the purpose... even a need for them so you don't end up committing suicide.... but on a daily basis I couldn't see myself using one.

  18. UMD Would've had a shot had it not been the greed of the Movie studios asking sometimes double what the DVD, with More Features, were priced at. If the Disks were priced Below $10 it would've been pretty popular. I loved UMD's, the picture was top notch, they were easy to carry (Don't give me the Portable DVD Augument it does'nt apply I can't carry a Portable DVD in my Pocket) and it saved time over converting.

Eh... 25 min or less TV Shows... it's not all about movies. I watch my Zen Vision M all the time with my Converted TV DVD Disks, it helps me plough thru the collection when I'm waiting around or something.

Well I don't think any one would ever say VHS bombed.

It's just at the end of its life cycle. A long 30 years (almost?).

You should ne neither watching a DVD or reading a newspaper, you should be driving. You'll be the next one squshed like a bug on the side of the road or the cause of someone being there. People get in accidents all the time because they are talking on their cell phones let alone watching TV.

Are you suggesting my full car computer with wireless internet and VG emulators is bad idea?

I know your kidding or at least hope you are but it's common sense and since I'm on the road so frequently I see it all the time. I almost T-boned a guy talking on his cell phone. He pulled right into the middle of an intersection at a red light and I was coming the other way. He didn't even realize he was in the middle. Luckily for him there was no one coming the other way opposite me and I was able to swerve around him. He saw where he was right before I swerved.... talk about seeing someones eyes get as big as saucers.. I was in my big truck, grill alone is about 4x4.

If you're driving you should be concentrating on driving... More than once I've avoided accidents that would have happened if I had reacted a split second later.

Half kidding. I do want a full car computer but with qa simple touchs screen interface. No more distracting then the radio when I'm done. It will play games via emulation but not while I'm actuall DRIVING.

  25. Why buy UMD when you can rip your DVD and save it to a ms duo pro, for watching on your PSP, or in my case mobile phone.
    Quote Quote
  26. Exactly. UMDs cost a load more than a DVD, and you can play DVDs on your TV, rip them and put them to the PSP to watch on there and so on. You can also make backup copies of them which you can't with UMD.

They priced it far too high, and consumers have an alternative. What did they expect?

As for Blu-ray - I am yet to see a Blu-ray drive available for my PC, nor a Blu-ray standalone player. I also won't buy it with all that DRM on it - doesn't it need to "phone home" every time I want to watch something, and didn't they say something about "content management" (read: buy a disc, but pay over and over and over again)?
