  1. I was into Staples yesterday and they are selling a Compaq Presario SR1720NX which is using the new AMD socket 939 Sempron chip... However this chip is not being sold yet by local clone shops... NOR could I find any info on this chip at AMD's website...

Here are the specs on the mobo which HP-Compaq reference as a socket 939 mobo... ASUS name A8AE-LE
    HP/Compaq name: AmberineM-GL6E

Perhaps anyone looking to purchase a Sempron should hold off until these are available thru your local vendors...

    Cheers

They have been around for six months or better..Every single one of them going in the "big name" pre-built boxes. And don't expect that to ever change.. With S754 and S939 going the way of the dodo in a few months (due to AM2 and it's server 1205? pin server counterpart), S939 will only stay on as a likely Sempron holdover through about Q1/Q2 '07 - unless AMD revises their roadmaps due to overwhelming continued demand of course. It is *possible* of course to get one if you must - say through an eGay auction of a "pull" chip.

[edit] Perhaps I'm just talking out of my ass here, since with the phase-out of S754 already, and S939 staying on a while, maybe they'll *finally* introduce S939 Sempr0n's to the white-box market.

On the somewhat bright side, don't be surprised to see an X2 5000+ (2.6GHz/1MB L2/dual core) *very* soon - no more than a slightly cheaper, less tested, multi locked version of their FX-60/Opteron 185 (locked too, but better testing)..A data sheet reflecting it's existance has shown up among AMD's tech docs.

  3. generally speaking, i wouldnt advise most people (especially the types of people that come here!) to buy a sempron rig for themselves...they are generally quite a bit weaker than their athlon 64 counterparts....that and they are 32 bit chips.....i'd really only advise a sempron for someone who only uses a computer for "light" uses (websurfing, checking email, maybe writing up an occasional document, ect) for more heavy uses, such as video encoding, cd to mp3 conversion, anything like that, i'd take an athlon any day of the week, and they aren't that much more expensive, either.....

Did you look at kenmo's computer details? He has an Athlon XP 1800+. All of the 939 Semprons will smoke this chip in any benchmark and in all real world performance tests.

Also he will have the ability to upgrade to a sinlge core Athlon64 and only have to upgrade the processor and not the RAM, motherboard, graphis card, etc.

But that being said you can get an Athlon64 939 single core 3500-3800 for about $200-250 (USD) including motherboard sometimes.
    snappy phrase

    I don't know what you're talking about.

  5. Actually I have three computers... The one in my profile is the one I use for video... I also have a AMD 2500+ for photo editing / 3D graphics and a Duron 750 used as a file/print server... All three computers are networked together...

  6. although i agree that a sempron probably of ANY flavor would beat out the one he's got listed in his specs, my main point is if he would upgrade, he'd be better off to jump to an athlon 64 bit, or maybe even a dual core instead....at least as far as the 64 bit athlon, it would lite rally be maybe a 20 dollar jump in price for a rather significant performance improvement.... and on that note, i recently picked up an amd 3700 64bit with a new case, power supply, AND mobo for under 400 bux shipped (still waiting on delivery though, UPS says it should be here by thursday.....)
