Well I was wondering if it was technically possible to have a dual layered audio cd? To make it up to 160 minutes?

I know with mp3 players its not a necessity anymore but before they took off had they considered making them?? Sure new cd players would have been needed but it would have been interesting.

I'm not talking about flipper discs with one disc with two sides I mean one side with two layers like dual layer dvds.

    Just curious.

Well, they kind of have them already.
Hibred SACD's are actually dual layer, one layer is a normal cd and SACD players can read through to the SACD layer.

I know it's not the same as what you are asking but that would be cool if they made them,
I've transferd more than a few live concerts to cd and had to split it up between 2 cdr's

Actually, they are not on the dvd platform or media.
They really have nothing to do with dvd's, Super Audio Compact Disc.
They usually combine SACD players with dvd players but they also have just SACD players, which will play just SACD's & standard CD's.

If you have just a standard SACD they have to be played in an SACD capable player, does not have to be able to play dvd's,
& the hybrid's can be played in a standard "CD" player to be able to play the standard cd layer.

One of the most famous examples is "Pink Floyd's" - "Dark Side Of The Moon" which was released on a hybrid SACD.
You can use it as a standard cd in any standard cd player or if you have an SACD player you can listen to the 5.1 remixed version.

    SACD
SACDs, or Super Audio CDs, offer much higher fidelity than regular compact discs, containing up to four times the musical information. SACDs will not play in traditional CD players, but SACD players are able to play both SACDs and CDs.
    Hybrid SACD
The SACD layer of hybrid SACDs offers much higher fidelity than regular compact discs, containing up to four times the musical information. Hybrid SACDs are designed for CD-quality playback on conventional systems, including home and car stereos, portable CD players, computer CD- and DVD-ROM drives, and DVD players.
I have never been able to get any cd or dvd-rom to ever read an SACD in any of my PC's, now the hybrid's i have because they just read the standard cd layer.

What is a Hybrid Super Audio CD (Hybrid SACD)?
A Hybrid SACD contains two separate layers. One layer carries the normal CD information and the other layer contains the high density SACD information - a multichannel mix and/or stereo mix. A Hybrid SACD can be played on any CD compatible player. However, if played on a standard CD player, only the CD layer will play. The SACD layer can only be played on a SACD player.
