So are remixes harmless fun or are some a little too strange?
I can like some dance remixes. But usually I prefer orignal and live versions but not dance mixes. They're a little too bouncy for my taste.

Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

I'd have to say that, for the most part, they are brilliant.
Some examples:
Elvis, "Little Less Conversation" and (especially) "Rubberneckin'"
Nightcrawlers, "Push The Feeling On"
KLF, "Doctorin' The Tardis" (not exactly a remix) -
I think it should be legal to shoot anyone whose only claim to fame is remixing other artist's tunes and calls themself an artist (P. Diddy).
However, the remix of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence" is very cool. Sort of like Linkin Park meets Depeche Mode. -
Remixes? Not usually. I do not mind when the band itself remixes their own songs. Rob Zombie has remixed his own things a few times, came out nice.
I hate it when rappers think they can remix hard rock. All they do is **** it up.
What about COVER SONGS?
Sort of the same, in my mind. A number of covers have been very good, in my opinion:
Metallica "Tuesday's Gone" (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Metallica "Stone Cold Crazy" (Queen)
Metallica "Whiskey in a Jar" (old folk song, Canadian?)
Pantera "Cat Scratch Fever" (Ted Nugent)
Marilyn Manson "Sweet Dreams" (Eurythmics)
UB40 "Can't Help Falling In Love" (Elvis)
Dwight Yoakum "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" (Queen)
I don't see much difference between cover and remix. It's just altering the original to suit another style.
You've also got whole bands that re-genre music. For example, there is a band that re-did all of Metallica's top hits as Bluegrass Country. And then you have bands like the Brian Setzer Orchestra that makes music into swing. Some of those can be pretty good to listen too.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Sometimes you get a good one, and other times you get crap. Honestly, the crappy ones usually do so poorly that I don't know why they didn't notice it before they spent all the time in trying to record it.
I haven't heard a rapper make a good remix myself. I think the closest decent one I've seen was the Fat Boys doing WipeOut with the Beach Boys. I didn't even care for it. -
I think remixes and extended versions of any record are awesome when they are done well 8). Ever since the 80's I've bought records on 12". In the 90's I would regularly think nothing of spending £50 plus a week on CD's/Records. Remixes and Dance versions make up a large part of my collection
12" tracks from the likes of Michael Jackson, Queen, Frankie Goes To Hollywood are just awesome compared to the radio edits. For example the Extended version of Welcome to the Pleasuredome is a masterpiece in my opinion and it's just a shame the 2 main guys were gheys. There's many many more artists who have great versions of their songs
most times in the 90's I was buying tunes I'd heard in the nightclub as my mate was the DJ and he'd give me all the track names. I'd end up having songs before they became hits as nightclub music normally found it's way into the mainstream popcharts. I also enjoy bootleg mixes as sometimes they are pretty cool when they completely mix 2 artists/songs yet you wouldn't even realise it
I guess I like dance/house even more as I love going to nightclubs for the drink, women, music and dancing 8)
In the 80's/early 90's the main local radio station that would play all the 12" versions of songs from around 2am til 6am and I would record them onto cassette so I could listen to them. Now we have a pretty good radio station called Galaxy1056 here where I live and they play great music 8). I listen to that most times and that's why I don't buy as many CD's now as I listen to radio most of the time -
Ever heard of Dario G.
I usually call what you're talking about "underground". I like a bunch of underground, but there are a few that I couldn't care for. Underground also is usually about 4 or more artists mixed together to make a 30-60 minute song with a heavy dance beat. If you have a good DJ who can segue seamlessly, you can listen to what seems like the same song for 4 hours.
