I been the forum but so far getting confuse. I am reading on here that a Pioneer DVR 420H can play divx movies but it has to be in the root directory. Put in a disc that is in that format and it did not play (contain six files and file names are over 8 characters long i.e not in dos format if that is important.) Is there anything I need to do to activate DIVX playback on this system. i.e. install a hack firmware or press certain keys etc? Thanx for your time.

It's possible, but it seems highly unlikely. It can play MP3 audio, that's about as close to a AVI type format as it does, AFAIK. Do you have a link to where you saw it could play Divx? Unless Divx compatibility was built into the hardware chips, a firmware upgrade wouldn't help much for that.
But someone may know a 'secret'.
Being that Divx players are fairly reasonable in price at present, that would likely be the better way to go.
And welcome to our forums.
