Hey,
I have been looking for a while on a guide and recommended tools for:
1) Backup a DVD9 (3 hour movie) with my new dual layer DVD burner
2) Can I burn 2 movies (each about 2 hours) on a single double layer DVD? I would like to keep the menus.
I have DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink and Nero 1.6x
Can someone please help me on 1 and 2 ??!! Point me to a guide ?
Thanks !

Here are 2 methods. Let us know how you do. I have not yet tried either:
https://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/dl_burning_with_pgcedit.htm
Method number 2:
https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=288931&highlight=nero+dual+layer
I have a new method that I use for Dual Layer +Rs that has been flawless for me considering the number of botched ones I did with my old method and DVD Decryptor. Kudos to Car.Mike at Afterdawn for this method. I also used Fuji (RicohJapan) +R DL:
"If you are doing a D/L disk you do not need Nero. Rip the disk as per the instructions I gave ( see below) and set up DVDDecrypter and AnyDVD ( 21 day free trial - so you might as well try it. If you like it then you can buy it)
Instead of writing using DVDDecrypter I want you to use the newer burn engine by the same author IMGBurn : http://www.imgburn.com/
Instructions Rip w/ DVDDecrypter and AnyDVD- Burn w/ Imgburn:
1.In DVDDecrypter go to Tools> setings>General> untick Check for Structure protection
2.Now go to I/O and tick ELBYCDIO-Elaborate Bytes
3.Enable AnyDVD
4.Now insert Movie( foxes head turns red) and go to Mode in DVDD>Iso read> click the decrypt button. It will create 2 files- image and a .mds file
5.After ripping turn AnyDVD off ( right click taskbar foxes head and click on exit)
6.Open ImgBurn> Tools> Drive> Change Book Type>DVD-ROM
7. Now go to Mode> write> find the .mds file you created and click on it and the hit the write button
I have found DVDDecrypter or Imgburn find the layer break better than Shrink or Nero but if you are happy w/ your method then by all means use it." -
Thank you so much !! I will certainly try both methods and post my results !
Thanks again...

Hmmm.. not sure if DVD Remake would work. The software side does not specifically say anything about double layer burning capabilities. The trail version doesn't let you try that or export the full movie.
Is there any one who has tried it ?
Any other suggestions ?? I'm just suprised that no one has addressed the topic of easy double layer backup or fitting two movies on a double layer dvd before !
Any help ?? -
I have tried using DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink to backup DVD9 to DL following some guides/advice someplace (I forgot where I got those) but failed. The 3 coasters I had will just stop at the layer break. Skipping chapters using the remote didn't work.
I tried DVDRemake Pro by just importing the DVD files then exporting them. Using Nero to burn the DVD files created by DVDRemake Pro, it was a success!
I can't say if it was because of DVDRemake Pro or Nero that made the job a success. I have to do more testing before I can conclude that the combination of these 2 guys did indeed made it so. -
I've been using dvdecrypter and anydvd to rip and record now deluxe to burn with fujifilm(richojpn). 100% sucess.after i installed the latest pxengine for record now,and a bitsetting firmware for my NEC.3540A

I made a few coasters this way, but I blame the media for that (Memorex 2.4x double layer). I've heard bad things about these discs. I recently tried some Ritek 2.4x DL, and those seem to work rather well. I have yet to get a coaster off them.
Sooooooooooooo, I hope this helps. I'm interested to learn about the merging of 2 movies though. If it was just movies, then I'd say merge them in separate titles and reauthor with your own menu, but that's just me. -

I like the thought of ripping with DVD Decrypter and burn it on a DL.
Are there any detailed guides that someone can post a link to ?.. I'm a bit of a novice and the screenshots help.
Any thoughts on how I can burn two movies on one and keep the menus ?
Thanks again ! -

Now for the second part...any ideas on keeping the original menus and burning two movies on one disc ? -

3. If I don't use AnyDVD and get the .iso file for output, I can write the .iso file using DVDDecrypter? (I've never used it to burn before, I have always used Nero. And with great results.)
4. If I use Nero to burn the .iso file, Nero may have problems locating the layer break on a DL disc? If I can burn with DVDDecrypter, will it have problems finding the break?
I'm gonna try and burn the disc using DVDDecrypter and if I have problems, I will try Nero (I guess I should add that it is Nero 7) next. I'll let people know what the end result is here, if that will help people out in any way.
Otherwise, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I tried "The Goonies" again with no success. I ripped it using DVDDecrypter without using AnyDVD and had no problems. Nice and fast rip speed. I then used DVDDecrypter to burn the DL disc and it wouldn't play in my stand alone player, but it would play in my PC. I then tried using ImgBurn to burn the disc and it, too, would only play in my PC. Finally, I used Nero 7 to burn the disc and, again, the disc can only be played in my PC.
Thinking it might have been the source disc, I tried to make a back-up of my "Big Trouble In Little China" disc and got a faster rip speed using DVDDecrypter and AnyDVD. I don't know why that was the case, though. But it didn't matter as the DL disc is also only playable in my PC. The only thing I'm left to think is that it is a media problem like a lot of people say. I am using Fujifilm DVD+R discs (2.4x) which, when I burned "Big Trouble In Little China" today, I saw that the DVD media code said RITEK-D01-01.
Other than that, everything went well. Either of the three programs I used to burn the DL discs handled the layer break without any problems at the time of the burn.
So is it the media? Anyone?

I would suggest verbatims, they may be a little more expensive but you get what you pay for.

I second the verbatim suggestion.Fuji film ricohjpn are also good, but you have no idea when you buy if they are ricoh or crap ritek.
Stick with verbatim.bmiller,ont.canada -
Thanks bmiller and Denvers Dawgs.
I was also just about to say that I saw another thread that was starting to cover the same area that we are now discussing. But I see that Denvers Dawgs has also answered my post there as well. Thanks again for the input. And the help.

I need some help backing up to DL Discs as well, the only difference is that I need to burn them region free. What I have tried is ripping with DVD Decrypter in File Mode, then putting all the files into a region free image using DVD Shrink, and then burning again with DVD Decrypter. It worked fine with Blade Runner which is small enough to fit on a single layer disc with no compression, but when I tried burning the Battlestar Galactica Miniseries which needs a DL disc, I ended up getting a coaster, but I can't remember exactly what DVD Decrypter said when it came up with an error during burning. What I want to know is if I can rip and burn a region free image for DL backup a better way.
I have a BenQ DW1620 Pro with the B7S9 firmware, but I can upgrade to the latest B7W9. And I'm using Memorex 2.4x DVD+R DL discs (I know but I might as well use these up trying, before I get a different kind). The software I have right now includes DVD Decrypter, ImgBurn, DVD Shrink, Nero 6, and some others which I use for DVD-to-AVI ripping. I'm new to burning DVDs and have only ripped them before into AVIs so you may need to treat me a bit like an idiot when explaining stuff."Did you park in a handicap spot?"
"No, I parked in two, I don't want any cripples scratching my car!" -
Doesn't DVDDecrypter remove region coding when you rip the files? Or can't you select the option to remove the region coding under settings?
When I started up DVDDecrypter, I see under tools/settings that it has boxes checked for removing .ifo and .bup RC and RCE protection under the ISO read mode, the file mode and the IFO mode tabs. Aren't those the settings to remove the region encoding?

Here's what I've experienced using DL media:
1.Use Verbatim, sure they cost more but they're worth it.
2.If you use DVDDecrypter to read and write make sure to use the MDS file as the source because the layer break info is needed(make sure it's enabled in settings),100% successful burns.
3.I have had 100% successful burns using Sonic Recordnow Deluxe (v7.3).
4.Nero 6.6 is hit or miss, one worked and the other didn't.
5.There's also player compatibilty, some are more picky about the layer break and their lasers can't read the second layer.
BTW...make sure you have the latest firmware for your writer: www.rpc1.org -
Okay, I just went out and purchased some Verbatim DL discs (the +R variety). I went back to my plan of backing up "The Goonies". When I used the Verbatim disc to burn the image, everything went like it did before, except this time I was able to play the disc on my stand alone player. I toggle through all the chapters and checked all of the bonus features and everything works. I only noticed one small problem. Every so often, the video stutters/stops for a brief moment. Then it goes back to playing the video. When I scan back and replay the section that stuttered/stopped for a moment, it no longer does this.
Has anyone experienced this?
Is it because I burned the disc at the max setting on DVDDecrypter? Using the Fujifilm discs I had before, DVDDecrypter would only burn at 2.4x. Using the Verbatim disc, I was burning at various speeds throughout the process, but always above 4x and never above 8x. Could this be the problem?
Could it be my old DVD player? It is a Sony DVP-NS300.
Any ideas?
Otherwise I am happy with the situation, because the disc works.
