After upgrading my LG4163B to firmware A105, the discs still will not burn at higher than 4X in Nero 6 Express, ImgBurn and DVD Decryptor. I have actually shortchanged myself as the last spool of Fujis I had were Riteks and they burned fine at 8X. Has anyone had any luck burning these at the rated speed?
I also notice the discs skip even when burned at 4X in the last Gig or so of the disc. These might be good for me when I do single episode discs of TV shows as they are invariably under 3.5 Gig but anything over that might be hit or miss on playback.
*sigh* Time to spend some more money and get another spool of the more expensive but better quality Sony Taiyo Yudens from Wal-Mart...

The PRODISC.R05 media code I assume? I've never tried those. But if they're as bad as the spotty FUJIFILM03 discs, I'm avoiding the Fuji brand altogether. I'm currently sticking to TDK since those discs are high grade and on sale.(locally)
-
Yeah, the R05. The only other comment in the media list says they were burnt at 8X on a Plex but I can't believe I can't get a rating using up to date software and firmware that both say max of 4X....
-
Try firmware A106. ProdiscR05 is fairly new media so the drive may not have proper support for it in firmware A105.
-
Where did you find 106? I'm staring at LG's US website and here is what it says:
"
GSA-4163B firmware
Windows XP
GSA-4163_A105.exe 1,448K
So, where is there a 106? Not in USA I imagine... -
Weird! I found it at the canada website but not at the USA one...well, here's hoping this works...
-
Nope...no good. Even with the A106 firmware, the Fuji 16X discs say 4X maximum speed. Guess we will have to await an A107 or else just ditch these discs for others that will burn at 8X or higher...

From CDFreaks Forums the only way to make the new Fujis burn faster is with hacked firmware but the scans of various test discs from a variety of manufacturers seems to indicate this as not being very viable. Most of the scans of the discs show power fluctuations that cause bad burns (rings) or other problems. Best to await a new firmware release I think... -
You could always strategy swap with MCSE but that may not produce the results you're looking for. I wouldn't know what strategy to try with those anyway. Oh well, set them on the shelf and wait for new firmware. I'm pretty sure LG will add that media code at some point. The few scans of that media I have seen have been very varied (some good and some pretty sad).
You don't have another burner do you? I have seen scans posted over at CDFreaks that indicate the disks were burned at 16x. The Benq 1655 and Pio 110 come to mind. Not certain of firmwares used though. Good luck.

One good thing I've found out is that my Liteon 5001 with my LG burner mod can burn these discs on the HQ setting. Previously, only the Sony Taiyo Yudens could be used without failures. Nice to know I have a cheaper alternative now...
-
Maybe I'll look into that. Not a bad price at all for Taiwanese made discs using Verbatim dyes...
Of course, the Fujis set me back $30/100 so that was a good price as well...
