  1. As the title says for people that don't fill a disk or are on a real budget and are willing to take a chance.

Staples starting Sunday morning has Playo 50 pks @ $4.94. I'm guessing that these are the Made in China probably not anywhere near Ty or MCC in quality. OTOH they might be good as long they are not filled and Staples has a decent return policy. For 5 dollars I might buy a spindle just to test and see how they bad they are or are not.

    Anyway
    Cheers

    Ehh...
I am going to be right by them monday so i may throw $5 away on 50 just to check them out & see what they are, might be good for data or transfering data, testing and then just throw away 8)

  4. I'm probably a sucker, but I could see chancing it, it's only five bucks. Maybe use for (non-critical) data, 4 Gb max. (And do an immediate scan after verification!)

I got a 50 pack of these (+R made in India) back at Thanksgiving (Nov) at Staples for $2.94 after rebate.

They are supposed to be 8x but I have to use 4x with my Sony DRU-710A and still have some fail.

Mileage may vary for different writers.

  6. Presidents Day week long sale. I don't think of as too cheap? when Staples was selling MIJ Fuji color DVDs at 30 for 8.94 last year and prices are dropping.

As I said I think they're made in china...

And for $5 what the heck

Just burn slow and run verify after burning. The problems mostly occur near the end.

Take an empty printer cartridge with you and make it an even better deal. Staples will give you a $3 off coupon in exchange for the cartridge. At $2 for 50 discs, they are worth trying.

I used one last night at 4x (Playo +R "Made in India") and got read errors over about 60% of the DVDR. Using the same Nero 6 settings, the DVDR burned perfectly with Imation media at 8x.

There is no financial savings. By the time coasters happen, your cost doubles or triples, not to mention all the wasted time.

  13. Bought 150 of the DVD-R, and 50 DVD+R, at Staples, at $5.00 for each 50 pack. Burn 2 of each with NEC, Samsung, and Maddog burners.

    They work.

the playo +r 8x made in china are aml....002 they r pretty much same as comp usa +r made in china 8x. i thought they would be abs crappy. but to my suprise if u max ur target size to about 3800 mb and burn at 6x (at least on my lite-on 1635/1653s) the dvdinfo scans i have made on 10 discs are all in the thigh 80's and low 90's in quality score. thats as good as a lot of grade A media! and for a lot cheaper! granted my target size avoids outer edge problems but hey they work for me. just wanted to pass info on.

regardless I just bought 2 spindles, I'll just use them for backing up my dvds, since I already have the original if the copy messes up big whoop. I wouldnt put anything important on these discs, just for recording a crappy show w/ my dvd recorder or converting a file to dvd to watch on my dvd player.

I wouldnt trust recording my favorite show or writing an important file on these, I'll write some opinions later. oh btw, are Chinese discs worse than Taiwanese discs or something? I bought a spindle of Staples brand Taiwanese discs and they've worked out great for me.

Has anyone sent in Verbatim rebates and got them? Good price if you get the rebates.

  20. Sure, I got my rebate before, they are pretty fast. I don't know about that meritline one, but its pretty small.

Isn't is funny how people will resize a burn below 4GB just so they can say "the media isn't crap if you keep your burns below 4GB". I'm sorry, but if you are resizing your videos/file complilations to accomodate the the crap media... it's crap media!

  22. I do not need to burn +4G DVD's everytime. Two people who bought
the disks told me that the disks are OK. So I went to my local Staple
try to get some. Well, there is nothing left (in San Mateo, CA). Good
luck for people who bought it.

  24. smearbrick1, I often make DVDs that are not full to the edge, It has nothing to do with not using the whole disk. It is more like I overestimated how much video would be left after cutting commercials out. I may set my Pioneer for 1Hr. 45 Min. on a 2 hour show and find it really runs anywhere from 90 minutes to 100 minutes. I always give a little room for margin when recording so i don't have to trim off credits or show or reconvert losing quality.

And sometimes I just want something short on a DVD to take to anothe room and don't feel like wasting a Verbatim or TY media.

I use dvdshrink at it's default size of 4.35 gb and these disks have given me no problem. maybe it's like buying a genaric drug, same ingredient but you don't pay the over inflated price to have a brand name on it.

I bought one pack and gave them away this morning. They burned OK in my NEC but after they were burnt playback was sketchy at best. I did both movie and data. The movie disc failed to complete a playback cycle and had noticeable imperfections. The data disc failed to read back 16 files.

    FWIW,

A neighbor went ahead and bought a 50 pack of -R Playo "Made in China" despite my warnings and gave me 6 to test. So far, the first 3 made it through Nero verification at 8x ok on my Sony DRU-710A.

  28. :P Call me a media snob if you wish - BUT; I would stay away from this Playo media. I love a bargain as much as the next guy but this stuff is destined for failure. If you just want to experiment then that is fine. But I guess even my trivial burns are too important to me to risk wasting my time. But that's just me!

I don't know why people rationalize crap media with
    - "it was free/cheap" or
    - "well it's okay if I don't fill the disc" or
    - "the data is not important anyway" (which begs the question of why you'd burn it in the first place).

You're pretty much stupid if you use these for yourself, or an inconsiderate jerk if you use them for somebody else. If 30 cents per disc is too expensive, for good media (TY! MCC! SONY! TDK!), then get another hobby.

Contrary to popular (misguided) opinion, a bad disc can be bad anywhere, not just the outer edge of the disc. So if you think burning under 4GB is a clever way to use bad media, think again. Most glitches start about 25% into the disc, and occur in random patches.

A thread like this, on a video site dedicated to video knowledge, should be along the lines of "WARNING - BAD DISCS ON SALE - AVOID" not "oh well, I guess they're cheap, I might as well use them regardless of quality". It's misleading to people who came online to get some solid DVD media buying advice.

A lot of newbies think they're invincible, they can burn anything and "it'll be just fine". Yeah, someday down the road, they'll actually get around to testing those discs or trying to play them in a player, only to find the disc is hard to read, or was outright just a bad burn from day one.

Sometimes it's hard to fathom what people are thinking.

    .
    .

The only exception would have to be something TBoneIt wrote. If it's a temp disc, couple of files (preview something, transfer a file between computers), and you'll be throwing it away quickly, sure, go for it. You may still run into a ton of coasters, however. But $5 is probably worth the savings in time from having to burn a RW disc.
