  1. Ok this will be a very detailed of my problem, please bear with me 8)

I downloaded a hilight video of a recent football match and to my supprise the audio played fine but the picture didn't, a problem i havent had in a long time since downloading AVIcodec(awesome tool!). After scanning said file i got the following information for the video:

    "348*240 (4:3), XVID =XVID Mpeg-4, Unsopported"

Which is wierd because i know ive got Xvid installed.
I followed the web link at the side which was:

    http://www.divx-digest.com/software/xvid.html

    And choose the following version:

    XviD-1.1.0-30122005.exe

During the instalation of the program I remember there being a problem with an .ax file, it might have been xvid.ax i cant remember properly, i was given the option to abort instalation or ignore the problem (this was not reccomended) anyway like a fool i clicked ignore and have since had sound problems.

    Problem #1

I have winDVD4 and whenever i try and play a DVD i get the following message:

    "failed to open audio device"

Which is annoying as ive recently started watching my futurama collection again. The wierd thing is media player/vlc player still play dvds fine.

    Problem #2

Mpegs/avi/wmv all play fine so do .mp3/.wav etc but I seem to have lost all my sound effects on windows which is annoying. Examples of my unfortunate sound loss:
    • Whenever i click the back/forward buttons after opening a folder i dont here a noise.
    • When windows starts up or shuts down i dont hear noises
    • When ive finished encoding something with TMPGenc i dont hear that satisfying noise (i really like that noise 8( )
    • When im playing a flash file you guessed it no audio, also when i convert a flash to mpeg the converted file has no audio even though im 99.999% sure the original .swf file had audio.
    • Videos on youtube/google video hav no audio

Phew that took some time to write 8)

If any of you kind people can help me out i would be very appreciative.

    Thanks

    David

All the problems seem codec related. You could try DxMan or Codec Sniper to get more info about your codecs and remove damaged ones. If you get nowhere with them, maybe a registry problem?

Also, since you had an installation issue, I would uninstall and try to reinstall your xvid codec.

Usually it is just easier to start from scratch. Uninstall/remove any codec packs and other codecs listed in add/remove programs. Then reinstall codecs as needed.
