    My brother gave me a DVD that he made (or had made) of some old home movies that were on video. I put the DVD (it's a DVD+R) in my pc and the movie plays fine (sound and color). However, when I put the movie in my living room DVD player, it plays fine but in black and white.

    What is causing this and is there some free program that I can use to correct this and, I guess, reburn it to a different DVD+R? I have other DVD+ and DVD-R's that I play all the time on my regular living room DVD player and they work fine.

    Any help that you can give me is GREATLY appreciated! I tried just making a duplicate of the DVD+R using DVDFab but the new copy does the same thing.

    First thing i thought also.
    But seeing as he is in the U.S. and i'll assume the home videos are from here and were transfered here i wondered if that was the problem ?

    Where did your bro "have it made" ?

    Check to see what the resolution & frame rate is.

    I'm not really sure how to check the reolution and frame rate. My brother has been in school in Europe for the past year and mailed the DVD to me from there. Is that what the PAL thing is you mentioned? If that's what it is, why would it play in my computer and DVD player but just give color on one and not the other (I'm stupid when it comes to these things so please forgive me). Also, if it is that, how can I make it work? Is there any free software out there to do this with?

    Thanks a whole bunch!

    Europe = PAL Disc.
    USA = NTSC disc.
    Computers do not see a difference between NTSC and PAL.
    NO there is no easy way to fix the problem....aside from you
    buying a cheap (inexpensive) DVD Player that can convert between
    the two formats.(you might even own one already and don't even know it.)
    Take the DVD to a place like Best Buy/Circuit City and explain exactly what you want and what you have and they should be able to steer you in the right direction.....since the problem you are having is VERY common.

    Don't be afraid to take the disc with you. You should take it to make sure that the player really does what the salesperson says it does.
    Try to look into a Cyberhome...and check the remote control for it....quite a few of them have a simple button on the remote that says N/P (NTSC/PAL) that most people are not aware of....since they never purchased a DVD from overseas.

  9. If you're going to get alot of DVD's from your brother then I would get another player but here's a quick and easy PAL->NTSC guide:

    You can check with most software players on your pc wyhile it is playing or you can use AVIcodec to check one of the VOB's on the disc, open it in DVD Decrypter under IFO mode and look.
    PAL is 720 x 576 - 25fps
    NTSC is 720 x 480 - 29.97fps (usually)

    And what everyone else said, alot easier to buy a cheap DVD player that will play PAL & NTSC, the Cyberhome CH300 is a good one from BestBuy and you can pisk them up for $40.00, i see them alot for as low as $25.00 on sale & rebates.

    You gotta be kidding
    I have yet in 15+ years to find someone at a BB or CC that has a clue about pretty much anything

    I just had the craziest experiance not 4 days ago at CC, they have to have the bigest chimps working there that i have ever seen!!!
    Total "MAROONS!!!"

    I have brought in SVCD's, VCD's, DVD's to test on diff. players and never met a salesperson yet who had a clue what 2 of the 3 formats were let alone what player will play, what is it called ? PAL ? NTSC ?
    His best bet is too research a player or pick one from a suggestion here.
