  1. Got my firewire card and used windv to transfer and it was perfect. No dropped frames or anything. Anyway what do you think is the best format to convert the vids to that will result in the best quality? I am not wanting to put on a dvd, just keep on my pc. What you think...avi, mpeg2, etc?

You're not going to beat DV if you want to preserve the quality of your original transfer. But if you need to reduce the size, I would personally recommend MPEG-2. The main reason is that is the most compatible format if you want to move it to DVD in the future. Second, maybe Divx, if you can keep the bitrate high enough. But this is just my opinion.

  3. Yeah, DV would be better but I am mainly going to keep them on pc and those vids are way too big. Mpeg2 is VCD format..correct?

No mpeg2 is dvd quality footage (or svcd if you use 480x480 specs - but you probably wouldn't want to if you're ever going to make a dvd because you'd have to reformat it).

    VCD is mpeg1.

  7. Wow! Was getting ready to try it but seems my mpeg2 part of tmpgenc has expired. I will have to figure a way around it.

There is a free mpeg2 encoder out there. Check the tools section on the left. I haven't used it though so I can't give help on it. I can't even remember the name I saw in another thread - just look in the column about the price and search for one that says freeware.
