I have a IBM 570E laptop (Pentium 500) which I'm trying to play some avi files with. I have tried WMP but it's waaaayyy to slow. Tried Media Player Classic and its a bit better, but still to slow. Are there any other players out there I could try, or is a p500 just to slow?

    Thanks for the reply BJ_M.

What about burning the file on a cd as an vcd and playing it in the cd drive. Would that be any better than reading it off the h/d with MPC?

I suppose converting it from an AVI file to another format (Xvid) would not "speed" it up either?

what type of avi ? there are some 50 types ....

ive had HD content play smoothly on p500's before - on dedicated systems ...

usually some codec like one of picvideo 's is pretty fast - so is the old on2 duck codec , which was made for playing hi res files on p350's - p400's

You could try original MS Mediaplayer 6.4.
It should be found in the same folder as the newer WMP as mplayer2.exe

Well thanks for everyone's help. VLC seems to play nice and smooth. The only problem I'm getting is that colors are way off. If I play through WMP the video jumps/skips, but the color is right on. I'll play with this some more and try to get the colors right with VLC.

Well I checked the "deinterlacing video filter" in the preferences, and all is good now

Older versions of BS Player are also good for limited resources. I was running Version .86? on an AMD K6-2 in desktop mode with very few Hiccups
