Hello all.
I'm capturing TV in DV format using my ADVC-100, and I'm taking the capture and applying the smart de-interlace filter in Vdub. My ultimate goal is to have the video on DVD, so I was wondering, after i'm done applying the filter in Vdub, what format should I output the AVi (from Vdub) to import it back to Sony Vegas and encode to MPEG-2.
I'm looking for quality rentention, dont' really have any space considerations to worry about.

If your goal is TV, don't deinterlace. If you have a progressive TV or a progressive playback player, the hardware will do a much better job that you will do in software. All you will do is butcher your material.
Just load the DV into Vegas, edit and output. If quality is your main goal, do not let a software deinterlacer near your material.Read my blog here.

I agree as well, but unfourtunatly, my situation is a little different. I'm doing a project for someone's car shop and I know it will be being playing on various devices like car screens and computer monitors, and I doubt they will use nothing but Windows Media Player for DVD playback (and not sure if those tiny LCD screens de-interlace).
I want to de-interlace just to be safe, I know its not the greatest for video quality, but I can hear them now asking, "what are those little horizontal lines that appear when something is moving" :P
So, please, I know "a rule" is sortof being broken here, but it must be done sooooooooooooooooo what do you all think???? -
In that case, why not just deinterlace in Vegas. I can't see a need to use virtualdub at all. And if you find there is a must have virtualdub filter, install the Debugmode Wax plugin and you can use it from the Vegas timeline.
The little car screens do deinterlace - they are just DVD players with LCD screens, so the player does the work.Read my blog here.

Most of these small car screens simply toss a field and work off 720x240/288.
Here is a "high end" 1440x234 example

Ok cool. I will try the de-interlace from vegas (using the switch - reduce interlace flicker).
Do you think an even better solution would be to use the "Tom" de-interlace in AViSynth and encode to Mpeg-2 using TMPGEnc. Or do think the easier Sony de-interlace method will suffice.

Check out what I said. I'm not 100 % sure but most car LCD players toss a field. If car players simply toss an interlace field, why are you saying you want errors in the remaining field?

I know I know....trust me it isn't something I really want to do, but i need to do it because the market i'm targeting with these videos do not know a thing about video, and i know for a fact that many of their cars are equipped with mini-computers with actual LCD computer screens. Even those who view the videos on their computers for themselves will most likely play them on WMP. You know I think all of this would be alot easier if WMP simply played interlaced video properly.
Anywho...back to the question that i know hurts you all to answer, if I were to de-interlace, do think think the easier method of using Sony Vegas is sufficient or the more in depth process of using AViSYNTH and Toms deinterlace filter (then endcoding with TMPGEnc) offer a significant advantage enough to use.

Wow guys...
after a bit of experimenting...i must say, i'm VERY impressed with Sony Vegas. I encoded two videos, one preserving the interlace, and the other de-interlaced using Sony (reduce interlace flicker switch). I play both back on TV and I CANNOT see much of a difference at all. There is definatly not a big enough difference for a casual watcher to notice.
I dunno how Sony's de-interlacing works, but i must say that it seems to be doing a great job. Looks like I won't be using AVISynth and Tom's deinterlace afterall, which saves me some time.
