Hello,
What is currently the best DVD Recorder with a VHS deck for converting VHS to DVD?
I found the JVC DR-MV5S and the Pioneer DVR-RT500.
It seems like the JVC has some cool features just for dubbing, but I would like some advice before I buy.
Thanks.

Just a note...The members here get tired of "best" of anything because the best is usually several thousands of dollars...professional stuff.
I think you want to know about the jvc and pioneer so try changing your title or start a new thread. -
Also most people here will end up telling you that anything "combo" is not recommended.

At any rate you can't copy commercial stuff with a dual unit. -
"Also most people here will end up telling you that anything "combo" is not recommended."
But neither will they recommend separate units for the same money that you would pay for a combo.
To the anti-combos here: I understand where you are coming from but if a non-videophile has decided to spend, say, $350-$400 on a combo unit, what separates would you recommend for the same money as an alternative? Or are you really saying that you don't think you can get acceptable quality from a combo OR separates for the money that will buy a decent combo? If that is the case, let's just say so.Bill Denton

I understand the resistance to combo units by some people on this board. If one side goes bad they are harder to fix and you wonder if some sacrifices are made in quality building two decks together. However they might be an option for some people short on space or worried about becoming a videophile.
I think if I had to chose, I would get the JVC professional model SR-MV40. The MV40 has two tuners and allows recording to both decks simultaneously and also records in true SVHS. The PQ on the will be better than a regular vhs deck. That's worth an extra hundred dollars to me. The build quality should be better because it's a professional deck also.
I don't know if the claim about not copying commercial stuff holds up. The back of the MV40 and the MV5S both have video outputs on the back. The MV40 has an S-video out and the MV5S doesn't. The L-1 input on the MV40 feeds the dvd and vcr decks side while the MV5S L-1 only feeds the dvd deck. It seems to me that it should be possible to put a tbc between the svhs deck and the dvd deck on the MV40 and allow commercial taping between those decks. It has two tuners so it should work. No one has tested this yet, but it should be possible. -
You are right. Here is a thread in which it was done with a Panasonic ES30V. It is not as convenient however. The big advantage of a combo is if you have good tapes. I use a borrowed combo and find it is very convenient to be able to use a "one touch" solution when no external processing needs to done.

I thought it might be possible on combo units. Thanks for the confirmation. Looking at the MV40 with it's twin tuners it should be even easier than with your test. If you use a small tbc like the AVT-8710 and the twin tuners work as independently as advertised, it should work very easily.
You are right about the convenience of the combo decks. I've got one and used it to tranfer my SVHS tapes to MiniDV. The process was quick and painless because my tapes were in good shape. The DVD/VHS decks cost less than half as much by comparison. For some people they might be a viable option. -
I actually picked up a cheap DRW-1000 Sanyo unit from Walmart a while back that had a programming error in the firmware for the first version; it allows me to dub any tape to DVD (macrovision is disabled). Unfortunately, the DV input for camcorders records for only 30 mins before stopping. If you fix that with new firmware, then you lose the macrovision bypass. I keep mine in the original firmware and don't record with the firewire from my camcorder.
