  1. For thise interested, I did put up a review of encoding 'Finding Nemo' in XviD. I did several encodes: 500, 750, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000kbps. Results are quite surprising - in terms of quality and target bitrate - and I sure didn't expect that out of the review...

    Well, see for yourself:

I liked your review. I'd like to see this same thing for other movies to see if these results are just for Nemo or if they are more universal.

Also, this test further validates my annoyance with the compulsion of the video world to convert to divx in the first place. There's nothing good about it outside of saving some space on a hard drive. You can't play it on a dvd player without all kinds of trouble in re-encoding, and it results in a loss of quality even at high bitrates. For my backups, I just rip the dvd to my hard drive and leave it at that. I use dvd shrink but I don't notice any decrease in quality, unlike divx. I guess I'd just rather go buy a bigger hard drive than watch a fuzzy, distorted movie.

With that said, it looks like 1500ish is the sweet spot for converting. I expected the sweet spot to be more around 2500, so I was a bit surprised by your results as well.
