For the most part, yes, it would be of little use.. because the TV you have is: 1) not HD compatible; 2) is a direct tube/CRT. From my understanding, you will gain very little, if anything, by using an upconverting DVD player with a direct tube TV, even if it was an HD TV.

I'm running a Momitsu V880 upconverting player to my Sony XBR910 tube via DVI.. Excellent pic, if you ask me.. but not b/c of the DVD player--mainly due to Sony's Super Fine Pitch technology.

But if you're planning on upgrading your TV any time soon to an HD one.. then yes, go for it.. the Oppo is allegedly a great bang for the buck (but only via it's DVI/HDMI input, I believe).. not sure of its component video capability. Others may provide better input.

Edit: avsforum.com. So much HD info there, will make your head spin. Good luck.

  3. what rbatty said!

For standard def, the Oppo is reported to be so-so. But hooked up thru DVI/HDMI (with adapter), this unit really shines! I have one & the PQ, features, etc are amazing for the pricepoint.

so I guess my question now is...
is there a dvd player that plays divx and xvid that is a better choice for my boob tube, or should i just go with the oppo, use it and pray that i win a projector or a hd tv some day? is the video quality of the oppo extremely comprimised through component ? an avg video quality will be fine for me but crap quality is a no no

I dont plan on buying a new tv within the next 3 yrs, yet as is unsderstandable i want a dvd player that will last technologically speaking (i take good care of my entertainment equipment so durability is not too much of a problem for me)

  5. not "extremely compromised", just that it's "star points" are earned with it's gorgeous PQ in HD mode. Also it can be firmware updated, Oppos tech support is first rate, & it plays Divx/xvid discs flawlessly.

The Pioneer DV-588A-s is a great DVD player that can do DivX and Xvid. You can buy one for around $130.00 if you are A-OK with a regular USA region 1 model.

This unit also has excellent PAL to NTSC but unless the PAL DVD is Region Free then you are stuck unless you buy the Pioneer pre-modified to be Region Free in which case it will play any region encoded DVD and as I said the PAL to NTSC conversion is very good.

However by the time you pay for the Region Free model you are, at that point, only about $20 less than the price of the OPPO. The OPPO is also Region Free and also does excellent PAL to NTSC so for the difference of only $20.00 I would say buy the OPPO rather than a Region Free Pioneer DV-588A-s unless being Region Free is something you don't care about ... in which case you will save about $70.00 by buying the Pioneer DV-588A-s (if you buy the normal USA Region 1 unit).

The price of $130.00 I gave for the Pioneer model is based on PRICEGRABBER.COM for the USA Region 1 model. For the Region Free model the cheapest place I have seen is 222-electronics which has it for $180.00

The OPPO as you know is $200

    All prices are US Dollars.

I recently bought the OPPO because of the rave reviews even though I already had an LGDVB418 upconverting player. I use it with a 50" Sony LCD RP HDTV. Frankly, so far I think the LG has a better picture (OPPO w/dvi, LG w/HDMI). I'll reserve my final opinion 'til I find my lost AVIA disc to see if I can tweak the OPPO any more. But, out of the box, the picture quality is not as good as the LG. As far as the tv goes, if it is not HD and doesn't at least have component inputs, forget about it. And you really need DVI or HDMI input for good conversion.

That's because that model is modified to be Region Free.

I was not aware that this cheaper model can handle DivX/XviD but I guess it can so for $100 that is a good price.

Quality will be much better than the Philips DVP642 anyways.

  13. big time!
The Philips is quite horrible. I bought one & was immediately disappointed in poor build quality, miserable excuse for a "remote" & the fact that it actualy could play only a very few DivX/avi files.
One of the reviews on the Pioneer on amazon makes mention of the substantial build qulaility & "feel" of the disc drawer & mechanism.
That alone makes it worlds better than the 642

I had a Philips DVP642 and was happy that I could play DivX/XviD on it as that saved conversion to standard DVD Video but yes I was not impressed with the image quality overall especially when playing back DVD Videos and the PAL to NTSC was absolutely dreadfull!

It died after only like 2 months to top it off!

I've been saving up for the OPPO as I have a HDTV now but I must admit that the Pioneer 383 at half the price is very tempting.

A friend of mine needs a new Region Free DVD player with PAL to NTSC and he was going to give me money (next week he said) to buy him a JVC model for $109 + shipping over the internet (he doesn't have a credit card nor bank account) but I think I will steer him towards this Pioneer 383 instead and use him as a guinea pig as to how good the quality of it is LOL

Only thing though is that one person on that AMAZON.COM thread about the 383 indicated that you get no color over component out if the DVD is PAL and you have it set to PAL to NTSC ... he says you do get color on composite and S-video though under the same circumstance. If that is true then this would not be for me but my friend only has an older TV with S-Video only inputs.
