Ok I have a dvd source 29.XXX fps which when run through dvd2avi says Film source. I need to run it through virtualdubmod to letterbox it and add hardcoded subs to it which is fine now I need to frameserve it to tmpgenc. I did this went to Frames> no change the reconstruct from field - adaptive but still get horizontal lines millimiters apart. I tried with Frames >change framerate to 23.976 whcih did not work either. Please help me
thanks

Hi-
DVD2AVI is old. Upgrade to DGIndex. But even if you stick with DVD2AVI, if you have a 100% Film source, make your D2V Project file using Forced Film. That'll give you a 23.976fps project file. The interlacing will be gone. I frameserve using AviSynth (much better than frameserving through VDubMod), but if you do it another way, just make sure that you apply pulldown either during the encoding or afterwards, so 29.97fps is output by the player.

Sounds like you tried to deinterlace to me. Not a good idea with a Film source. Anyway, there are lots of people that can give you the TMPGEnc instructions. -
I only used dgindex as well, force of habit calling it dvd2avi. Anyway all I used it for is to tell me what source it was. I have to use virtualdub as avisynth crashed my system the last time I used it. Sorry should have mentioned my dest is to reach a VCD mpg(preferable Pal but would settle if I can atleast reach Ntsc film). Dont know what you mean? I thought I was IVTC it with the
Frames - no change
reconstruct from field - adaptive
OR is it
Frames - 23.976
reconstruct from field - adaptive
bit confused??? -
Hi-
Sorry, like I said I don't use TMPGEnc. It does have an Auto IVTC feature as I remember. But if you frameserve with AviSynth, you can create a Force Film D2V at 23.976fps and avoid the IVTC and get the encoding done much more quickly. I have no idea why your computer crashed when you used AviSynth. You created a good AviSynth script file (an .avs) and tried to open it in VDubMod and that's when it crashed? And the computer crashed, and not just VDubMod? -
Actually a while ago I gave Avisynth a try. When I say that I mean just installed it. Then reboot, wont reboot, so dont wanna tempt fate again.
So what option I would choose If I wanna do this in Virtualdub.
thanks -
If this is an NTSCfilm source then there is no reason not to use dvd2avi (DGIndex) to frameserve. Doing a full blown IVTC on it is like opening a door with a bazooka.
Just run it through dvdavi using the forced film option then use VirtualDubMod to open the d2v file directly. Do your letterboxing and subbing and then frameserve to TMPGenc.
If you want an NTSC output then just set the output framerate to 23.976fps and set it to 3:2 pulldown when playback.
If you want PAL I suggest you do your resizing (to PAL compliant resolution...presumably 720x576) in Virtualdubmod since you may have to adjust your subs accordingly. You might as well also set your framerate to 25fps while you are at it. Then when you frameserve to TMPGenc just use the same PAL compliant settings and you should be good. -
I tried using dgindex to framserve to virtualdub but it would not accept it. Probably tried Mod version of it will try and check if I used virtualdub or Mod.
thanks adam -
Well now that I think about it, I belive Vdubmod uses avisynth to load d2v files so that still won't work for you. Ok I see two possible options.
DVD2avi-->Vfapi converter-->Vdub-->TMPGenc
Or you can simply run your mpeg files through pulldown.exe with the nopulldown option set to remove the pulldown flags. This is the equivalent of using forced film in dvd2avi. Then load into Vdubmod and proceed as normal.
To make things simpler demux your vobs to a single mpeg2 file so you don't have to run pulldown a bunch of times.
