Could someone tell me how to convert VOB files from 2.35:1 to 1.85:1? I know this would make me a lose a good portion of the picture but I'd still like to know how.

Demux the video and audio from the vobs using rejig, load the video into either virtualdubmo or avisynth, crop, resize, frameserve to your favourite mpeg encoder to create a new video stream (still 16:9, of course), then re-author with your audio to get a new DVD. You *might* be able to use one of the vob tools to just replace the video - I'll leave that to you to find out.

Lot of work just to butcher a perfectly good film (sorry, but 2.35 is my favourite aspect ratio).
