I have an AVT-8710 TBC which I've been using for about a year for processing my VHS tapes to DVD-RW (which I then author on my computer to DVD-R).

I started having trouble with it a few months ago. It would display a purplish, staticy-scrambled picture on-screen, which would also show up on the DVD-RW, so it wasn't just a display artifact of some kind from the DVD writer output to the TV. I took the TBC out of the loop and the VHS to DVD transfer works fine (although I'm concerned about the end-product quality, which is why I got the TBC in the first place).

I had the local electronics fix-it shop look it over, but the guy just scratched his head and told me he had no idea what might be the problem. He told me he adjusted the power supply and made a few other minor adjustments to things that were loose or perhaps not tight enough for a good connection. Unfortunately, no good came from it.

So, is there somewhere I could send my TBC for professional repair, where they might actually be able to figure out the problem, or would I be better off saving up and buying a replacement?

I'm not overly fond of the AVT-8710. I notice that very often snow will confuse the unit, as well as lack of signal, and it will have chroma channel problems. One or both will cut out. This leads to green or purple tinted images. My fix is to unplug the s-video input and plug it back again while a picture is playing out of the VCR. You cannot turn it on before an image is given to it.

Is there even a way to turn it off? I thought it was just "plug it in and go"?

Ahh, ok. Well, I'll give that unplugging-the-S-video thing and see if that has an effect. Thanks Lordsmurf.

Well, I tried the unplugging thing, and no luck. I tried unplugging both the UPS and the S-video cables to no effect. Still all purplish and poor video quality.

Is there anywhere anyone knows of I could try sending my TBC to for repair?
