  1. I read in one of the guides on this site that when you reach the final "Burn" stage in Ulead DVD Workshop you can check a box that esentially says "do not encode compliant files" so that you don't re-encode files that are already MPEG-2. I can't find this option anywhere. I have version 2. Is it only an option on some versions of the program?

I have been making some DVDs with mixed files (some MPEG2 and some AVI and some WMV) so I would like the DVD Workshop encoder to encode only the files that need it. How can I do this?

  2. It will default to 'Not convert" files that dont need it,It will default to "Convert" files that do need it.you will see this option in the edit stage when you bring the Video files into Ulead.

Yes, Ulead moved it to the EDIT step in DWS2.x, and note that you can make the selection for the Video and Audio separately (the "Convert to disc template" is an option under the VIDEO and under the Audio tabs).

  5. Ok...so I took a DV clip that's about 20 seconds long and exported three versions of it with the Premiere 6.5 MPEG Encoder. The only difference between the three was the field: none, lower, and upper. I want to compare what these will look like on a TV.

I dropped the three files into Ulead DVD Workshop 2 and made sure the "Convert to Disc Template" for all three was un-checked in the "Edit" tab. No menus just the three short MPEGs. When I went to burn it showed the status bar and said "Converting file1 video" then "Converting file1 audio" then "Converting file2 video" etc....

This makes me think that Workshop is re-encoding the three files. Am I wrong? I had DVD Highest Quality selected in the Disc Template which has similar encoding specs as what I used in Adobe (VBR 8000 max, LPCM audio). But I would think that at this point the disc template would be irrelevant since I did not check "Convert to Disc Template" for any of the three files.

    Am I missing something?

How long did it take to create your dvd folders? DVD WS will show those messages even if it's not re-encoding. You would know it is re-encoding because it would take some time to do the conversion. Did the progress bar move quickly, or slowly?

Did your project have motion menus and/or motion buttons -- they can take some time to encode.

  7. It was pretty quick...but each file was only 20 seconds long. No menus...nothing but the three short 20 second clips.

The DVD came out ok...I couldn't tell the difference between no field and lower field while the upper field was definately wrong.

So, I guess when it says converting...it may not be actually converting to MPEG2. I'll try it with a long clip and see how long it takes. It would be nice if the descriptions were more descriptive...like "Converting to MPEG" or "Converting to whatever".

    Anyway, thanks for the info.

  8. If the "Do not convert" is not Checked then it will "NOT" convert. Just as GeorgeW said It will show those messages,But I think it has more to do with just checking them file and pre making the VOB,Not sure if Pre making a vob is the right term, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

It's "converting" them to DVD-Video structure (VOB, IFO, etc)

    I doubt it.

Because after that it goes on to "encoding menu..." then "Video/audio multiplexing" then "finalizing VOB".

Rather late perhabs to ask, but I have an additional remark/question re reencoding: I tried loading SVCD files and it loads them, BUT under "EDIT" the option for ticking "Convert to Disc template" is greyed out - and automatically ticked.
When I tried loading a compliant file (resolution seems to be the 'issue'), the option to tick or un-tick "Convert to..." was available.

Is there a solution or do I have to stick to DVD-lab in such a case? I tried "SVCD2DVD", but like a bit more sophisticated menues...

SVCD mpeg2 files don't have a "standard" resolution for DVD, so DWS doesn't give you the option (i.e. the box is greyed out, and the program will convert to a dvd standard resolution).

DLP will allow you to author using mpeg files that are slightly out-of-spec, but that's a "proceed at your own risk" option in terms of meeting full dvd compliant specs...
