Ok, so I won't bore all of you with my 48 hour attempt to do a basic task.

I want to take a xvid file, convert it to divx, burn it on a dvd with toast and get it play on my phillips dvd player.

To date I have taken the xvid file, re-encoded with avi divx via ffmpegx and burned it to a dvd. The disc plays fine on my computers (mac and pc) but skips around and is only half visible on the philips unit.

I have tried everything, burned the dvd as a dvd-rom, burned it as a divx disk, and nothing works.

I have a G5 imac, Toast 7.0.2, FFMPEGX and QT 7.0.1. Can someone please give me any suggestion as to what i am doing wrong.

    Thanks

If your Phillips player plays divx, its quite possible your xvid file will play too.

Try it out before going any further.

  3. Try DivxToDVD. Once you've converted the xvid file then use nero to burn the video files outputed by DivxToDVD to a DVDR, i hope this helps.

I don't think those are mac programs.
I also think he doesn't want a traditional dvd (mpeg2), rather, a data dvd with divx video files on it.

    I could be wrong.

I am looking to do a divx or xvid ready dvd. If I do burn it in toast, which format works best? Do I make a divx disk or a data disk. Which format of data disk? What is odd is the disks play on mac/pc platform but not the divx capable dvd. I tried a few movies with the same result (and 15 wasted dvd's).

    Try this.
In toast, click on the DATA tab
In the sidebar under the Formats tab, choose DVD-ROM (udf).
Drop in your XVID file and burn to DVD-R.
This *should* be playable in any DVD player that is can play divx.
    But I'm not guaranteeing it.

A useful tool is in a program called D-Vision. It allows you to 'fix' divx (xvid) files. I believe it does something to the keyframes.

    Good luck.

Burning it straight from xvid to dvd via dvd rom worked.

HOWEVER.... If I combine the 2 avi files vis ffmpegx the video gets garbled. I can only assume that is a ff problem. What other program does anyone recommend for joining?

  11. If using Toast 7...

    1. Select Video tab at top
    2. Select DivX disc in the drawer on left
    3. Drag/drop video file into the main window
    4. Click red record button

    Hi,

I want to burn Xvid and DiVX movies to a DVD, so I can play them on standalone players.
I've read I must burn them as DVD-ROM (UDF).

But can I use folders? Do most standalone player accept folders?

    Thanks!

    answering the first question...

I have the Philips DVP-642, a dvd player capable of playing just about any format!... (mpg,avi,divx,mpeg2, dvd, etc)... if you have this one or another from Philips, here is what you have to do (if using Toast)

    1) choose the Data tab
    2) choose the "Mac & PC" format
    3) just drag you raw avi or divx or whatever over to the toast window... (you can mix the different formats)
    4)burn it.... voila!

sure is a lot easier than processing all this stuff so it can play on a standard DVD player...

    good luck...

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for your reply.

However I still have a question; can I burn DiVX files within folders?

    Thanks!
