  2. Andre Rublev is a good one that springs to mind. I remember it being rather long too, but still a classic. I see you already mentioned, I just haven't seen that much Russian cinema.

I've seen Dr Zhivago and Reds. Both were as long as the Russian winter and as much fun as a frostbite. No more thanks any way.

(sorry, I just can't help being ignorant every now and then)

  7. Sergei Eisenstein was an amazing director -

    Strike
    Alexander Nevsky
Ivan the Terrible I & II
October (Ten Days That Shook the World)
    Que Viva Mexico
    Battleship Potemkin

Sergei Parajanov was another great director -

The Legend of the Suram Fortress
    Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors

    Aleksandr Dovzhenko -

    Arsenal

    Others -

    Chess Fever
    Earth

The Masters of Russian Animation DVD series is must!

I don't really see many Russian films but those are some of the films with the most amazing images, which have been a big influence on me.

I watch a lot of Russian movies. Most of the comedies pgmatg mentioned are Russian classics. Russians (Russian speaking) been watching those for decades.

For some reason most Russian movies that make it intarnationally are the worst ones. Those are the movies that get noticed at all those European movie festivals. Most Russians don't even like those movies.

I have too many movies that I like to remember.
Brother is a classic. Sergei Bordrov Jr. is one of my favorite actors. He died too young. Oh yeah, another classic is Boomer and DMB.

BRIGADA is my favorite series. I might even say it's one of my favorite movies ever.

I just saw Lilya 4Ever the other day, though it's directed by a Swede I believe the movie itself is in Russian with Russian actors/actresses. Movie was a bit depressing but what it portrays probably happens more often than we think? Good movie nonetheless. Was nice to give my two years of Russian in college a stretch though

  10. Have any of you seen "Night watch"? It's a very good Russian Sci-Fi / Fantasy movie ("Lord of the Rings" meets "Prophecy"). It's been out on DVD for some time, but since Fox bought all American distribution rights, they have mandated to stop making NTSC formatted dvds of it. The disk has been slowly disappearing from even Russian stores in America. And Fox kept postponing the release until next week, while sequel "Day Watch" is already out in Russia. Ain't US movie studios grand
