Stop me if you've heard this one before: you bring a CD home from the store, pop it into your computer, and it installs a hidden CD/DVD device driver on your PC that tries to prevent you from making copies of the product. No, we're not talking about Sony's rootkit debacle—this time it's copy protection for computer games.

Starforce, makers of the security software (which also prevents emulators and debuggers from running while the game is launched), offers no apologies for their program or the way it works. In fact, they have gone on the offensive, threatening critics with lawsuits. Cory Doctorow, who recently posted a story about the Starforce software, promptly received an e-mail from Dennis Zhidkov, a public relations manager at StarForce Inc. Mr. Zhidhov, who seems to be a prickly sort of fellow (see the message he left on a CNet forum), had this to say:

wow, this is very sad. i quit playing most pc games due to this stupid copy protection technology. if i can get it on my xbox then i'll play it, my computer is too important to have stupid software slowly destroy my drive and etc. besides, windows gives anything too many permissions to run loose on your system. Once WINE will be able to run such game i may consider it since the code won't run on a UNIX based system. What is this crap anyway? sueing someone over pointing out the negative aspects and voicing a opinion. besides, this world is allowing corp america to virtually "rape and pillage" as it wishes.

    And another link. http://www.star-force.com/protection.phtml?c=83&id=766

Most people here put high value upon Mark Russinovich's testing methods. While I tend to disagree or at the very least think Mark's testing doesn't go far enough to prove a point this guy says the Star-Force protection does not do as some people claim. Stepping down of the IDE bus can occur for several reasons. We have hundreds of topics in these forums discussing this very thing with all of them unrelated to gaming software.
