A friend of mine backed up a dvd recently and had the aspect ratio settings wrong in the backup program (DVD X Copy, I think. He uses a few programs). It was an old re-authored dvd of his i.e. no menus. I think, and he thinks he had the setting for 16:9 on (instead of Auto) on a 4:3 title. The resultant backup is "stretched horizontally". His problem is he cannot find the original disc to re-do it and this is the only copy he has.

My query is, can he fix it back to the original aspect ratio using any available tools? And without losing much in the way of quality? He tried DivX to DVD on it and even though it did more or less fix it, the resultant VOBs were only about half the size (and thus half the quality). Is there any other software that will fix it and/or a method or set of steps to allow one to (try to) get it back to normal. I'm hoping that someone here has had similar problems and have solved it accordingly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rip it back to the HDD, then use IFOEdit to change the AR and create new IFO files, then burn the results back to a new disk
