Before I get to the problem... I use a One-For-All JP1 programmable remote to control all my stuff, even my DVR-231 dvd recorder. I use a macro to turn on my tv, HT system, cable box, and my DVR-231 dvd recorder one after another. Here is how the DVR-231 works when you turn it on. First, it says "hello" on the unit's front panel display. Several seconds later, while "hello" is still on the display, the drive in the unit makes a mechanical type sound. Then the unit activates (lets an a/v signal through: before this the tv screen is black) Then it says "load....NO DISC" because there is no disc in the drive. The ENTIRE process from pressing the power button to when it is fully on takes quite a while.

Now to the problem. I've had this recorder for a couple months now and just today for the first time, when I turned it on, it got stuck at "hello" and would not do anything. I waited and waited and waited until I decided to push the power button on the unit. I pushed it several times until the unit came on, then shut off. When it said "off" in the display, it got stuck there too. Then I unplugged it and proceded to plug it back in. Now it seems to turn on and off normally now. What could have made the DVR-231 get stuck at "hello"?

  2. DVD recorders are computer based devices... sometimes they can hang up and need to "reboot" in order to power on properly again. Probably not a big deal. If it does it more often, you may want to get it exchanged.
