Cook County removes phone-sex number from Web sites

January 24, 2006 - A toll-free telephone listing has been taken off Cook County Web sites after callers found themselves connected to a phone-sex service.

The 800 number previously provided information about inmates at Cook County Jail.
Jail officials said they let the number lapse in December 2004 because of budget cuts, but forgot to remove the listing from Web pages for the jail, county courts and Sheriff Michael Sheahan.

"It's not really something we can control," said sheriff's spokesman Bill Cunningham. "But obviously there was some failed oversight."

The listing was removed from the Web sites Monday.

Philadelphia-based telephone provider PrimeTel Communications Inc. acquired the unused number, the last four characters of which spelled "jail," after a mandatory four-month waiting period and reserved it for a new customer last April.

The jail has switched to a local number to provide inmate information

It's all a cover up. The jail needed some extra money so they started pimping the female population via the phone. They just removed the number because they got caught.
