  1. I have an AVI video and want to make the upper part of the screen black for a couple of seconds in the beginning. I wanted to know how I could do this in any program.

I was trying to get rid of subtitles on the top of the screen using SubRip but it only detects them on the bottom of the screen.

    Hi shadowfox,

The easiest way would be to crop the top of the picture off for the few seconds required. Load your AVI into VirtualDub and use the crop filter.

You may have to do this on just the segment you want to work with, rather than setting the crop to only last a few seconds of the whole AVI. Experiment...

I don't know if the picture will "move up" at all but I'd hope not.

Be aware that VirtualDub defaults to uncompressed AVI unless told otherwise.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.
