hey this is my first post on this site and i need help

i am trying to convert all my vhs tapes to dvds. when the vhs' get transferred to my pc they are in mpg format. i want them to stay in mpg format. but when i use windows movie maker to edit the video, it converts it to .wma.

can someone please help by telling me about a video editing software that lets me choose what extension i make it and also lets me change the audio in my file (from 2.0 to 5.1).

    Thanks

WMM is wmv and DV only. As a general rule, the less processing and re-encoding, the better. Try one of the free mpeg editors in the tools section.

This is a list I used in a similar post for some MPEG video editors:

    MPEG StreamClip

    MPEG-VCR

    VideoReDo

    MPEG Video Wizard

    Or more: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/video-editors-basic

The first one is freeware and there are a few other freeware ones in the link above.

Stereo to 5.1 would be a very complex undertaking. And you still will end up with about what you started with. It's easier to use 'pseudo surround' from your surround sound amplifier. Most have a setting for that. But if your really want to give it a try the software way: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic326127-30.html

    And welcome to our forums.

EDIT: And since you are planning to create a DVD from the files, you might want to become familiar with the DVD format and specification. It's to the upper left on this page in 'WHAT IS' DVD.

VideoRedo is good for simple assemble editing and basic ad removal (although I have issues with the interface displaying correctly on some machines). For more complex editing I would recommend Womble Mpeg Wizard.

It's apparently in there somewhere as mentioned in another thread that refers to the one I linked to: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic336042.html#1747825 Or you can search through the Audio forum for other methods. I spent about 6 hours trying to do a MP3 to 5.1 conversion with freeware, and although I partially succeeded, it didn't sound any better than the pseudo surround my home theater amp puts out.

But you could PM Soopafresh and he may be able to give you some leads.
