  1. Hi,

I'm hoping to learn a little bit about what MPEG4 DVD recorders are and if there are any of these available in stores (Pioneer, Panasonic, etc.). I have heard these are the best for recording onto DVD with but I don't have any idea and never heard of them until today.

Also, do most all DVD recorders record the same or are their better brands to watch for in particular?

    Thanks!

Current DVD recorders use MPeg2 standards. Some will play some MPeg4 variants.

Full MPeg4 recording will happen in time as hardware encoding and decoding technology advances and is cost reduced to the consumer market..

Approved MPeg4 formats for future HDTV DVD are h.264 and Microsoft's VC-1. Other formats may emerge.

  3. What sort of time frame are we looking at in terms of seeing MPEG4 DVD recorders on the market? 6 months, 2 years, etc?

    Thanks...

  4. My understanding is that most hardware makers are not interested to
make MEPG4 hardwares. Because more money can be made from new
technology, link blue-ray or HD-DVD. The more profits the companies
can make from somethings, the faster it will be delieved to consumers.

Depends on what you want to pay. Computer MPeg4 encoding hardware exists today but in non-standard products. DVR recorder technology will track the introduction of the HD DVD players and use similar hardware chips. There is no current standard for H.264, VC-1, WMV or Divx for a DVD-5 DVD recorder or player. Early buyers are subject to quick obsolescence.
