As the release of HD-DVD players comes closer here in Sweden i am wondering what kind of TV you need to get the full expirence. Most of todays tv is "HD Ready" but what exactly do the mean with that, that they can read the signal but then what?

It must have HDCP through HDMI connectivity to play back at full resolution. Otherwise the quality is no better than progressive scan from a standard DVD.

Personally, I would not be buying yet.

Maybe HD ready for broadcast but not for HD-DVD.

The only way to view HD resolutions from these players will be over a DVI or HDMI connection with active HDCP encryption. A verified HDCP continuous handshake must be present to get any HD resolutions. Otherwise you will see 480/576i or 480/576p same as current DVD players.

There is still the whole BluRay vs HD DVD thing to work through yet, although the specs described above will be applicable to both.
