    Hi,
I'm thinking of eventually replacing the aging Sony SPD-S7700 dvd player with the Oppo to better accomodate the new 720p projector. It will fit the gap until the advent of the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray in terms of price and picture performance.

It also fulfills the role of playing many PAL dvds that I have. For now, I have used the Philips DVP642 for playing back divx and PAL discs. It has been very good, reading almost any DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL (Verbratim and RiData discs)

How does Oppo go in terms of media compatibility for self-burned DVD+R/DVD-R/RW and DVD+R DL discs? The old Sony - half the time it plays the discs, half the time it doesnt

    thanks

I've had -R and -RW discs in mine...no problems so far.

  3. The Oppo DV-971H. The other one is part of a cheap home theater system and doesn't have some of the features of the 971H, including no Faroudja or DVI out. Don't get the 971H unless your TV has a DVI or HDMI in. Over component it isn't nearly as good. Your projector should have one or the other.

I've played +R and -R with no problems. I haven't played Dual Layer yet, but the reports are that it plays them all except some made from some models of standalone DVD recorders. They're working on getting a firmware to fix that.
