I burnt my first Video DVD-R DL using TOAST 7.0.1 (UDF-Volume).

The Apple DVD Player plays it fine, but my Panasonic DMR-E85H does not recognize the DVD as such and displays "No DVD".

Have I made a mistake? Is the Panasonic's drive incompatible with DL media (reading of course)?

  2. Not sure which burner you used, but +R DL are considered more recognizable. The Pioneer dual layer writers in particular couldn't write to -R DL until later firmware supported them.

  3. Book type is probably set to DVD-R DL which will not work in most players. I strongly suggest not using DVD-R DL. DVD+R DL is a much better format for DVD Video. -R DL will not support the correct setting of layer breaks, and many DVD players will not work correctly. If DVD+R DL also don't work, you need to get a drive that sets the book type correctly, or use a drive that supports bitsetting.

Hi, I did some testing with a Panasonic DMR-E55 and it did not support +R DL media when its book type was set to DL.

DVD+R DL works just fine if the book type is set to DVD-ROM.

The same problem must be happning with your DVD recorder ad the -R DL media.

To workaround this, use +R DL media and make sure that the book type is set to DVD-ROM.

I also did some research on the web and found that the Book Type can only be set on DVD+R DL media.

Which program on the Mac allows Book Type setting? Will TOAST 7.0.1. do this automatically? Will I find a check box prior to burning if +DL media is found?

    Cheers,

    Joachim

    Good luck.

  7. Best thing to do is buy a drive that has it set to DVD-ROM in the firmware from the start. Pioneer have it set and it works most of the time. Lacie drives always have it set to DVD-ROM. There are tools to do it on the Mac for NEC drives, but not all drives support bitsetting.

All newer NEC-drives support it (last 2-3years). NecflashX is graphical tool for FW updates and booktype-setting. Sometimes it's nice to have it easily changeable, there are really weird drives and STBs. Don't like OEM Apple Pioneers or Panasonics, as Apple tweaks their firmware. It can be upgraded, but it's pain in the ass, still.

I never really understood, why someone would like to have -R DL, or even -R, since most players work better with +R and +R DL. (This starts war) Had problem only once, Apple Powerbook (so called Pismo) with it's original DVD-reader. And problem was solved with booktype-setting, it reads +R nicely (with suitable BT).

Toast uses setting that has been coded into burner firmware. It won't let you choose it. You have to change it using external application (like NecflashX for NEC), if required.

So I bought Verbatim DVD+R DL media today. It works without problems in the Panasonic DMR-E85H (playing of course).

The burner I use is a Pioneer 109 with latest firmware 1.59.

    Thank you guys!

  11. Is there such a beast as a rewritable DL disc yet?

There will never be such a thing like a DVD+/-RW DL.

The reason is the very low reflectivity of the layers, which is even lower for RW.

  13. That not exactly true. DVD+RW DL are being worked on. But what's the point really. I believe the specs are in the works.
