  1. When i burn a SVCD in nero the program imports and analyses the file after which it recodes it to a bitrate which is marginally different from my linear editor's (Womble) output based on a SVCD output. This takes a long time for what may be a 50 bitrate difference. After this it burns the file on CDR/RW media.

I want a program thatvwill accept my mpeg file create the VCD structure and burn startightways without recoding.

    2) What is the extension of the main movie file in the SVCD structure? extension is dat or mpg?

    3) I read somewhere that the maximum video bitrate fro SVCD is 2600? Is there any risk of players not being able to play an SVCD if coded and burnt with bitrates as high as 2600. In other words is lower a bit safer like say 2400. Even VCDEasy recommends a 24xx bitrate when ,peg files are added to the project

  2. You want to use VCDEasy then rather than Nero.

However, you still need to ensure that your source files are correctly multiplexed. The easiest way to fix this is to use the multiplexor in TMPGEnc (File --> MPEG Tools --> Simplex Multiplex and then choose the logical settings).

    (2) The extension of the source files on a SVCD is nominally MPG but it is also entirely irrelevant. The filesystem on a S/VCD is simply a logical mapping of the raw data on the disc and as such, it is not a "file" as such.

    (3) The maximum combined bitrate for a SVCD is 2x CD (i.e., the old 2 spin CD rate).

That is, your video bitrate + audio bitrate + padding + overhead must be less than 2778 kbit/s. However, since you are probably playing your SVCDs on a DVD player which would use a DVD loader rather than a 2 spin CD loader, your mileage may vary in terms of your max bitrate that your player can handle.

Many first and second generation DVD players could not read CD-R/W discs well or with difficulty. Although the theoretical read rate for CDs on even a first generation 1x DVD player was approximately 3x CD, in practice it was often less. Pragmatically, it is often recommended that you keep your max. combined bitrate less than 2700 kbit/s. Assuming that you use a standard 224 kbit/s for the MP2 audio, that leaves you with just under 2500 kbit/s for the video.

Use VCDImager or similar direct authoring tools instead of Nero. VCDEasy is another option, just use the last freebie version.

In Nero, uncheck the box that says "create standard compliant cd" and it will accept your file without reencoding and burn it.

    To elaborate at 3):
Many DVD players have trouble with SVCD @ max bitrate - some even start struggling above 2000 kbps - my previous seemed to hav a threshold @ 2200 kbps. Above that, and the movie would start pausing as the reader had to catch up.
