Hey guys I quick question here.

I noticed that Sony Architect and Adobe Encore have this feature:

    Fit to disc compression
Automatically adjust the project video bit rate to fit your DVD project onto 4.7 GB DVD media. Only video and audio that requires additional recompression will be adjusted. If a project cannot fit on a disc, DVD Architect software lets you modify settings on a file-by-file basis to ensure proper size.

Now, I am using Ulead Dvd Workshop 2 and when I made a dvd I had used video fles which exceeded 4.7GB ( project being burnt to disc was around 6.4GB). Now, I am wondering if Ulead DVD Workshop has a feature like the one mentioned above so that I can fit all those video files onto my dvd via compression. So if anyone knows how to do this would you please explain to me how to. Now, if this is not possible in Ulead DVD Workshop or there is no such feature is there a program(s) that I can use so that I can calculate what the maximum bitrate I must compress my video files to so that I can use all my desired video files onto 1 dvd 4.7GB disc.

    Thanks in Advance!

You need to not EVER let authoring software "do stuff" that you don't understand or know about. Encoding is a major mistake.

Make sure your files are the right size in advance. Or use more discs. Or use DL media. But don't just let it cram stuff on a disc however it sees fit. It'll create inferior quality video almost always.

Well if video quality is not that important to me, I'd still like to know how about anyway just to see for myself ! I did realize that compression would without question reduce the quality of my video file. But likewise, I'd still be interested in knowing how to

To calculate it yourself use the bitrate calculator here: https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm

As LS mentioned it's better to encode the video to fit the first time, adjust your project files don't reencode your finished disc. Don't know if DVD WS 2 has a fit to disc option, I know 1.3 doesn't.

A *rough* guide to go by is if you start out at 8000 for a hour of video you need to drop it 1000 per extra 15 minutes. 1.5 hours at 6000...... Note that following that will leave you extra room on the disc which you should do, try and keep your discs under 4GB, discs are more prone to fail at the end.

Also note you need to use lower resolutions at lower bitrates. I'd suggest using a lower resolution once you get into the 4000 range.

If quality isn't an issue for you (or your dog), then why not just produce oversized disks to the HDD and use the venerable DVD Shrink to make them fit. Faster than re-encoding, and probably faster than taking the time to get the bitrate right in the first place. Otherwise look int he tools section. Coalman already pointed out the online version, but there are standalone calculators as well.
