  1. Hello everyone!

I didn't know where do go on the web and on the forum for this question. I want to build a server that basically will allow me to use my tv in the living room to play all of my video, music, and picture files from two computers.

I want it to be accessible from both computers; as well as be able to use a wirless mouse or remote to scroll through either a OS or a menu type program. I guess this would be a media storage server where I can put everyone on it and free space on my computer.

I saw that D-Link has a streaming Media Player, that is what I want but with storage not streaming. Also I want the option of hardwired not streaming as well.

I thought it might be cheaper to just build a barebones system with components just for media use.

Sorry if I'm not being clear any questions I will answer. I just want to have all my media stored on it and easily accessable when I have company I can just search through a menu style interface with the names (maybe even thumbnails next to name) and select the movie, song, or picture.

Any suqqestions on already built player/storage center, DIY projects, other websites that would help me better, anything. Thank you in advance

I would like to stay in a decent price range as well nothing over 500 dollars.

Sounds like a good case for a HTPC to me.

You'd use your TV as the monitor, and get a small form "tower" to sit in your living room, with cordless KB and mouse. This of course could just be a very basic system, with a "back-end" storage server (could even be one of the existing PCs) sitting elsewhere in your house but accessible across your LAN.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. thanks jim, always answering my questions. really appreciate it alot.

Do you know of any prebuilt systems just for this or do you think it would be cheaper to build my own?

I've seen some prebuilt systems but I find that rarely they have exactly what you want / need. Building it yourself (or at least buying it from a computer shop or online facility that allows you to customise parts) is the best way to go IMHO.
    If in doubt, Google it.
