I want to copy a few DVD-RWs that contain TV programs recorded from broadcast TV (perfectly legal in UK), on to DVD-RW (or DVD-R), to send to my daughter in Germany. The DVD-RWs are formatted in Video Mode (finalised) and VR Mode. I have MacTheRipper 2.6.6 but the DVD-RWs will not mount on the G5's Desktop, (although one did mount but it was blank and MTR did not see it). So I am stuck at first base.

How can I do that please? What software do I need? (I have searched various DVD forums - no luck.)

Also, what is the tech. designation for a video recording of the type described above: DVD-Video, DVDr, DVD pqrst? I need to know so that I can penetrate the cryptic designations thrown around in DVD forums.

You shouldn't have any problem with a finalized video-mode DVD, but you do need special software to extract the video from a VR-mode DVD. There is no need to finalize a VR-mode disc for this purpose. Toast 7 and PixeVRF Browser are good at reading VR-mode discs. I find Toast 7 to be more reliable for this purpose.

The way it works is to open Toast 7 and choose DVD video as the format in the Video window. Next, click the Media button to enter the Media Browser. You should be able to figure out from here how to access the DVD's titles in the Media Browser. All you have to do next is drag the title from the browser to the Video window to extract the MPEGs.
