Anyone ever make a sucessful back up of the movie the deer hunter (the first release) of the movie have a bought copy, and two other used copies I know I really don't need a backup with three copies but just sort of curious as to why three seperate copies of the same movie refuse to be backed up in any old or new and updated programs.after 800+ sucessful backups this is the only one that has completely stumped every prog I have thrown at it.I have tried, shrink all versions, dvd decrypter all versions.any dvd from versions back in the 2.0 range to yesterdays update, dvd fab decrypter all version, vob blanker, even data recovery programs, every one of these hang.and refuse to finish.anyone had this problem?I have been backing up my discs for about three years now and this has been the only real problem I have encountered.By the way I am not new to this board originally joined in may 2002.

Yes. I own it, and have backed mine up. Region 1, a release which has been on my shelf for at least 18 months.

Since so many programs are failing, and this disc does not have any of the "new, tougher" forms of copy protection on it (which only began to appear in the last year), I would look carefully at any changes to your own system. New software? Added anything? Picked up any spyware or virus or malware from the Internet which is now running in the background, and stealing your system resources? Did you experience a lot of errors on a recent disc, causing your DVD drives to change from DMA mode to PIO mode? Have you filled your hard drive to the max, and it is now rejecting large files? Have you defragged lately? Have you tried a different title, as an experiment, to help to narrow the focus of the problem? What media are you using (if you actually get to the burning half of the process)? At what speed? Are you trying to use compression? Is this a movie-only job, or a full disc job? What firmware?

Pick one good program (DVDDecrypter, for example), and tell us exactly what happens, and when. Right now, because of what you did not tell us, we have no idea if the problems happen during the ripping process, or during the burning process. Post a log. Give us some stuff to go on.

Deerhunter is no different than the vast majority of DVDs out there. I suspect something has changed in your own system, or your own configuration.

Thanks for the reply,I am up to date on all anti-virus,anti spyware defs, using trend anti-spyware and trend anti-virus system has been scaned system has been defraged with microsoft defag and perfect disk defrag software, all programs fail on the rip process on all three disc just before the russian roulette scence. What is getting me is the disc was out way before the sony copy protection and the new stuff dream works is using.and I actually used dvd decrypter 3.5.4.0 to back-up madagascar that was to suppose to be a true rip guard disk.didn't have to use any programs to help dvd decrypter like ANYDVD.just set it to a slow read speed 2X and told to to cycle tray on read error it found two errors and completed the movie, this will not work with deer hunter.Just for an expieriment, loaned them to my brother in law to try on his system and he has the same problem with all three disc's also.We have both been trying this movie for about 5 months now as soon as a new version of a program comes out we try it again,I have backed-up probably 30 movies since my last try with this movie and all were completed without any trouble.maybe I just am not going to be able to back this up but three disc's that act the same way sure is weird, especially as old as it is.

Sounds like you have a scratch in the disks at around the same spot. Look very closely, a scratch going the direction of the spinning media will stop any ripping attempt.

I also backed up Deer Hunter with no problems using DvdShrink only.

Unlikely to be a scratch. Well, to be on 3 discs of the same film-3 scratches on 3 discs!!

Give DVD43 a try; this may work. A simple program that occasionally pulls off the job when the more 'renowned' progs don't. Anyway, worth a try as its free.
