  1. I just got my brand new psu from new egg the Thermaltake TR2 430w model. So I went to install it, plugged in the main power connector and the +12V connector, i then hooked up the 2 optical drives, the 2 hard drives, floppy drive, 6600gt video card, and 2 case fans. I then pushed the power button on the front of the case and i heard a pop and my computer didnt turn on, it tripped the circuit breaker, and the psu smoked a little bit. Does anyone have any ideas what I did wrong?

I called new egg today and they said cos it did turn on for a second that it was physically damaged and all they can do is give me $20 for it(39.99 total price).

    Thanks for your help.

    1 GB DDR3200 Ram
    Evea eGeForce 6600gt video card
    2 HDD
    2 Optical Drives
    2 Case Fans

as isogonic mentioned the ps was probably bad to begin with. you now need to hope your mobo and other components aren't fried as well.

i would demand newegg refund you the whole amount. that's ludacrious they'll only refund you $20 bucks.

buy a ANTEC TRUE POWER SUPPLY.

I can't believe newegg would give that kind of answer to you. From my experience they make everything right all the time even when its your fault. I hope they aren't slipping. I'd definitely try calling back. I really think you might get a completely different answer by talking to someone else.

I don't understand their answer either. What would be wrong with a PSU except physical damage? Are they saying that because it worked, if only for a second, that the product they shipped you was not defective so you are just stuck with it?

In any case, can't you just get the manufacturer to repair/replace it?

NewEgg has always done right by me. I place orders with them almost every week. Sometimes more than once a week. They are a good source of cheap parts. Sounds like you got a bad egg. It happens.

If you paid with a Credit Card you can dispute the charges. Telling a customer service rep that will usually get you your money back. This is a good power supply.

I used it in a UV Wizard ATX Case from tigerdirect. Been running strong. An AMD Athlon 64 3500+, Asus Enforce Board, 512MB RAM, an SATA-150 200GB, and a DVD Burner.

Will they give you an exchange instead of refunding only partial money?

I've never heard of any company returning only partial money though. It's usually all or nothing depending on the circumstances.

The only cases I've ever seen where people haven't got their money back from a reputable company was from tigerdirect. Tiger does not refund your money for customer damaged CPUs or components. It's usually quite easy to tell the difference between a bad part and a customer screwed up part. Tell tale signs of customer CPU damage is black marks, bent pins, microscopic paste material residue everywhere. that's the only time I've ever seen a company not return the full amount or exchange for a new item.

This power supply is quite good and quiet. It does help in case heat reduction and doesn't give off alot of heat itself. The cabling also looks nice in cases with plexi-glass viewing.

The only thing I can think she meant by that was that it worked fine and that you must have broken it yourself. Call someone else back at Newegg and just explain it better. You hooked it up properly and according to manufacturer recommended directions. It started smoking...duh its defective. I bet you anything a different representative of Newegg just gives you an RMA # straight off the bat.

I damaged a $500 CPU trying to install it. I broke a pin off and their website's disclaimers clearly state that they are not responsible if pins are broken, since there's basically no way that can happen except user error. I admitted it and flat out told them, "I guess I'm out of luck but I just thought I'd call anyway." They asked no more questions and just gave me an RMA #. I got the replacement CPU later that week.
