CCE, TMPGEnc, Procoder, Mainconcept. I use TMPGEnc as it fits my budget.

  3. Do you mean the best with a pricetag under 5 figures?

Do you mean the best in terms of speed?

Do you mean the best in terms of features and capabilities?

Do you mean the best in terms of maximum compatibility?

Do you mean the best which runs on a standard PC?

Do you mean the best in terms of my opinion, or somebody else's?

Do you mean the best in terms of the average user actually being able to install, configure, and use it?

Do you have any clue how truly meaningless such a question is, without qualifiers, and how many times it gets asked, and debated, without any true resolution?

It is very much like asking what is the best vanilla ice cream, or truck, or anything else about which there are many parameters to measure and it basically comes down to personal preference.

pchan had good suggestions. theres a program called TMPGenc Xpress that's kind of a easier wizard type interface that will let you convert just about anything to anything else.

disregard Nelsons post. Some people forget that there was a time they were new to this place, or even how to interact with humans.

    yeah screw you nelson

Totally inappropriate! Next time, a formal warning may be issued.

  7. Sonny, I spend my entire day "interacting with humans" and I get fairly well paid to do it. I speak publicly, as well as teach classes, and am often requested for my interpersonal skills.

There is limited time here, and limited interchange. I also have no idea of your skill level, or other wants/needs/desires. In such a case, IMO the best course is to illustrate as clearly as possible that there is no "best", most particularly since the meaning of best is unclear, due to the way the question was asked. The parameters I have listed would be those which must be evaluated, that you have apparently not considered these issues tells me most of what I need to know.

Further experience will tell you what the question is, if not the answer. At this point, it's like trying to convince a teenager that a Ferrarri is not the best car there is. Some in-city driving, a few speed bumps, a long trip and some mechanics bills will do it just fine.

    Have a nice day

I agree with Nelson37. Without the proper qualifications, there is no way to answer your question.

And the "yeah screw you nelson" comment can get you a warning. Pretty good for being a member for only a week.

I also agree 100% with Nelson37. You really don't deserve an answer to your silly question. If you had any sence, you'd do a search for "encoder tests", but that's probably to dificult for you.

It's not that i think Nelson's asking for more information was wrong, but if you do have such good interpersonal skills why did you not use them? I'm sure you are familiar with things like reader orientation and how to be clear and concise as to what you mean to say. And "reading" your audience..perhaps noticing they are new and maybe didn't know to consider those variables.

What you posted were valid questions mixed in with sarcastic questions and phrases like "Do you have any clue how truly meaningless such a question is"?. If the poster did know how meaningless the question was would he have posted it? Your post belittles the poster and assumes that he is just a lazy idiot.

Since time is so valuable, it would have been quicker and easier to say:

I need to know more information before I can answer that question. Do you mean better in price? speed?...etc. (the end)

The "screw you Nelson" is obviously not appropriate, but it does qualify one thing, that Nelsons post was anything but friendly and showing of good interpersonal skill. You may be amazingly skilled and handsomely paid but you cannot say to me that your previous post was going to get a positive response.

If posters aren't searching the forums and lazily posting then say "do a search for "xyz", that's quicker and easier than spending half a page trying to make your point and failing because you are rude. This is videoHELP.com. You can argue all day long about how the poster should have done this or that and get all bent out of shape about it or you can tell them quickly and efficiently what they need to do (search, give more info...etc). Now I may be accused of being preachy, but to me this is just common sence, i.e. public domain :P

dude...you made me laugh...you really did...it made me realize how futile and insignificant arguing any point in a place like this is.. :P

but i keep trying because i'm stupid . I just see alot of harsh responses and i know they aren't always without merit..but sometimes i feel they are. This site has a reputation for being a great resource but it also has a reputation of heads getting bitten off

  13. Nelson37,

if your post had come from a newbie I would have hit you with a formal warning. I understand your frustration but that does not excuse your lack of civility towards the OP.

  14. not to pile on, but i also side with nelson.

ok ok..i certainly did not intend to start a "civil" war..(tee hee)

  16. Suggesting to the OP to do a search is simply a waste of time. If he got to the first page, read the FAQ and standards pages, as they are supposed to do, then he would have known to search. Experience tells me these things are simply not done by the vast majority of noobs.

I did not assume anything about the poster, I evaluated the evidence provided.

I do not subscribe to the educational theory which places self-esteem above learning. I believe in providing examples of what the problem is, and how it should be corrected. I do not care what various individual opinions of my methods are, I know from experience that they are effective. They should arrive at the answer through their own thought processes, rather than have it spoon-fed to them.

I would guess that the OP is at least considering aspects of the question that they had not thought of before, and which were not prompted by the simple suggestion of various favorite softwares.

I am also curious at what point I excercised a "lack of civility towards the OP"?

If the OP did a search for "encoder tests" or "encoder comparisons", he would see a wealth of information and opinions.

At the very least, he would learn that there is no "Best Mpeg Encoder", just a bunch of personal faverates.

  18. There is virtually no best anything - and since the OP's question has been answered this useful thread is now closed.

Thanks to all that gave productive answers.
