Im thinking about purchasing a multi region dvd player and was wondering which model and brand was the most recommended. In addition, I would be interested in knowing about the recommended dvd players with cracks to open up multi region capabilities. Price will also be a factor in my decision.

The Philips DVP-642 is one option that SOME of us have used and liked. However, it appears that quality control is not what it should be and some of them have big problems. Also, some people totally flip out and insist that the model has the worst picture ever. I don't agree with that assessment, but some people here are VERY adamant about it.

Cyberhome makes a variety of models that can easily be made to go to multi-region mode.

There are various options here sometimes recommened that cost more than $200 US, which probably is more than you want to pay.

If you get either a Cyberhome or the Philips DVP-642, they tend to "run hot", so be sure you put them in an open space with a lot of ventilation or you will start to have problems with them after prolonged usage.

I've just placed an order for the LG LDA-531 and am expecting it sometime this week. I spent a lot of time looking for a DVD player that'll fit all my needs, and this came the closest. When I test it myself, I'll write my own review, but based on specs and user testimonials, this is what I've been able to ascertain about the unit:

    Positive:
-plays Divx, Xvid, CD, DVD±R(W), dual layer ±R, JPEG, MP3, AVI, MPG,
    (S)VCD, WMA
    -Region free with PAL/NTSC converter
    -Progressive scan
    -Upconverts to 1080i through HDMI
-8 in 2 multi memory card slot
    -plays DVD-Audio
    -excellent picture

    Negative:
-only upconverts retail DVDs through HDMI interface. From what I've heard, it'll upconvert through component only if the DVD is burned with copy protection removed during the ripping process.
-some users have reported audio sync problems during upconverting, but it seems to involve mostly users who are using a converter to connect the HDMI output on the player to a DVI input.

I'm anxious test this player out and see if all the above holds true. I paid $175 for mine at http://www.onlybestrated.com/lda531-1080i-upconverting-divx-xvid-player-with-hdmi-p-47.html and paid an additional $4.00 for a CD that'll enable it to be region free.

the philips dvd player looks to be around my price range because im am buying a dvd boxset as a christmas present and that is already going to run over a 100 due to its limited foreign availability. is there anything that needs done to the philips in the way of hacks to make it region free? also what is so bad with the picture, i just plan on using regular rca cables to hook up the dvd player. nothing special.
