I don't know if you can "rip" a dvd to a standalone recorder as I don't have one. But why don't you just do that on your computer? I assume you have a dvd burner on your pc/mac. It would be real easy.

It can do it but there is a problem. If the dvd's you want to place back on the hard drive are in dvd-video format, the EH50 will re-encode them when it does the dvd to hdd transfer. Normal speed or real time transfers result in re-encoding.
The only ways to transfer from dvd back to hdd drive without re-encoding is wth a dvd-rw ( VR mode ) disk or dvd-ram. It is a bit odd because the EH50 cannot record dvd-rw in VR mode but will accept a VR mode disk produced by other means. I would guess it is unlikely you have your video in dvd-ram or dvd-rw ( VR mode ) since these two have low compatibility with most players.
The above is all from the manual.
